HERBERT STEIER Obituary
December 3, 1926 - March 12, 2018. Died in his sleep after a brief illness while convalescing in Florida. Career-long newspaper copy editor for the New York Post, New York Herald-Tribune and, for 28 years, The New York Times. Took particular pride in his work mentoring young journalists. Grew up in Brooklyn before moving to Baldwin, LI, where he lived for more than 40 years prior to his death. A graduate of Brooklyn College, a World War II radio operator in the U.S. Merchant Marine and a lifelong Yankee fan. Devoted husband of Barbara Steier. He is also survived by six children from his two marriages: Richard, Ellen, Wendy, Kenny, Keith and Laura, as well as 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Known for his jokes and puns, he will be cherished and missed.
