HERBERT ZIMILES

ZIMILES--Herbert, passed away on August 5, in New York City after several months of fighting illness. He was born on August 14, 1929, and was raised in the Homecrest neighborhood of Brooklyn by his parents Solomon and Gertrude Zimiles. Herb graduated from NYU in 1950 and received a Ph.D in Psychology from the University of Rochester in 1955. He returned to New York City and worked for over 30 years as the Director of Research at Bank Street College of Education, where he developed and evaluated innovative programs in child development. He then moved west to become Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University, for twenty years. Although he had a mathematics background, he was an outspoken critic of many aspects of his profession, especially the overreliance on quantitative methods. Nevertheless, Herb strongly believed in the power of analytical tools of psychology to enrich people's lives and provide insights into the human condition. Herb was married to Leontine Slavin Temsky, with whom he raised two sons, Eric (Betsy) and Jonah (Ellen) Zimiles. He subsequently married Lois Wladis Hoffman, with whom he lived in with in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Herb is survived by his brother Robert Zimiles (Donna), first wife, two sons, five grandchildren and one great- grandson. In addition, he was close to his stepdaughters Amy (Jim) Kilroy and Jill Hoffman and their five daughters.
