HINKO STROKE Obituary

STROKE--Hinko Henry. Hinko Henry Stroke passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 6, 2024, at the age of 97, in Cranbury, NJ. A professor of physics at NYU from 1963 to 2019, Henry Stroke, born in Zagreb on June 16, 1927, escaped the Nazis in 1943 on a children's refugee boat to the US, having fled Yugoslavia, hidden in France, and climbed over the Pyrenees into Spain, where he and his family were arrested. He received his PhD in Physics from MIT in 1954, was a Postdoc at Princeton, did research at MIT, Aime Coton, Ecole Normale Superieure, University of Munich (Garching), and CERN. In 1983, Henry joined the ISOLDE research team at CERN and continued to spend a few months working there every year for 35 years. Henry was affiliated with the Societe Francaise de Physique, European Physical Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and was Editor of Comments on Atomic and Molecular Physics. His research involved nuclear structure studies through electron-nuclear interactions, low-temperature calorimetry for neutrino mass, dark matter search, solar spectroscopy, and laser spectroscopy of radioactive atoms. Henry received fellowships and honors from the American Physical Society, Optical Society of America, American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Senior U.S. Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Senior Fellowship in Science. He authored numerous papers and was editor of The Physical Review: The First Hundred Years. An accomplished choral singer, Henry sang with Chorus Pro Musica of Boston, Collegiate Chorale NY, and Munich Bach Choir. He was an avid hiker and cyclist until the age of 89. Henry's colleagues, students, friends, and family knew him as a warm, kind, generous, peacefully happy, and brilliant person. Henry was loved by all who knew him. He was predeceased by his wife, Norma Stroke. He is survived by his daughters Ilana and Marija Stroke, his sons-in-law Robert Swanson and Bruce Adolphe, and his grandchildren Michelle and Yasmine Swanson and Katja Stroke-Adolphe.
