HOWARD B. SCHOW

SCHOW--Howard Bernard, 84, passed away peacefully early Easter morning, April 8th, 2012 from natural causes. He was a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, and one of the world's great stock pickers. He is survived by his wife Nan, three children and their spouses, and five grandchildren. Howard was Founder and Chairman Emeritus of PRIMECAP Management Company. Previously, he had been Chairman of Capital Research and Management in Los Angeles where he managed the AMCAP Fund until he left in 1983 to start PRIMECAP, where he was known as the lead manager for the Vanguard PRIMECAP Fund. Howard shunned the media because he believed his ideas belonged to their clients. But, his 50 year record as a portfolio manager garnered the attention and respect of the investment community as one of the very best in the mutual fund business. His stock picking ability extended across decades, investment types, company sizes, and market conditions. The one constant was his ability to outperform the market. Howard's colleagues will remember him for his competitive spirit, his utter dedication to his profession, his sense of obligation and responsibility to the client, and his eternal optimism. Howard started his philanthropy as soon as he had the means, and was partial to his alma mater, Williams College, endowing a professorship and giving the lead gift for the Nan and Howard Schow Science Library. In 2000, he funded a private family foundation to support healthcare, education, and the environment at the community level. Just as with his investments, he enjoyed meeting people and seeing results. To date, the foundation has supported 99 organizations, including the new Nan and Howard Schow Trauma Center at Huntington Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will take place at St. Edmunds Church in San Marino, California, on Saturday, April 21, at 10am.
