IRA GAREY Obituary

GAREY--Ira S., 81, died peacefully on March 10 at Casa de La Luz Hospice in Tucson, AZ. Beloved husband of Carol and devoted father of Joshua and Matthew; he leaves behind three brothers and three sisters and countless family and friends who he loved dearly and felt their love in return. He served honorably as a member of the US Army in Korea - followed by a distinguished career in publishing, which included his role as Publisher of Seventeen Magazine. Ira lived with Carol and their children in Westport, CT for over 30 years - he spent his work days impeccably dressed in Manhattan helping to champion the magazines he represented, while serving as a trusted colleague and mentor. A talented chef and gracious host, he and Carol resided over many dinner parties with family and friends, resulting in fond memories that will be cherished by all those involved. An avid athlete, coach, and devoted fan of the Yankees, Giants, Knicks, and in later years University of Arizona athletics, he was present for many stirring victories (and some agonizing defeats) in the Bronx, Meadowlands and at The Garden. He and Carol moved to Tucson in 2002 to enjoy a lifestyle in line with the relaxing pace of the Southwest. He was truly a great man who impacted many through his passion for life, selfless support of others and ability to find the good in all of us...he is gone, but will never be forgotten. Absolutely the best boss I ever had. Worked for him at Seventeen Magazine in New York City. Every time I eat sea bass in black bean sauce I think of him! Sad to know he's not with us anymore.

This is shocking. He was my mentor at Seventeen. Always in my corner, always with good advice, always a gentlemen, except on the tennis court. He and Carol were a couple to be admired.

Dear Carol,
We go back as far as your fairy tale marriage to that beautiful man. I am deeply saddened that he is no longer here.
I have been in Phoenix for 40 years, including
kids and little ones. Let's catch up!
Meanwhile, may the happy times give you strength.

With love,

Dear Carol I saw Ira's obituary in the NYTimes this morning. So many fond memories of terrific dinners and talks -- always will big warm smiles and big hugs. I now send them back to you, full of friendship sadly disconnected, but still ever present in thought and memory. xgeof
