IRA HAUPT Obituary

HAUPT--Ira, II. Ira Haupt II passed away on April 28, 2023 after a short illness. He was a scion of the well-known New York Stock Exchange/Wall Street Haupt trading family, one of only two families in history to have three generations holding membership on the exchange simultaneously. He was a partner in the securities firm, Ira Haupt & Co. founded by his grandfather, Ira Haupt, and became a major player in the relatively unknown world of Wall Street trading back in the 1950's. For his services, he received numerous awards and recognitions. He was an explorer of the Maya Civilization in Mexico and Central America. Based on this interest and expertise, he became a member of the Explorers Club. He was a treasurer of the Club and was awarded the prestigious Sweeney Medal for his financial services. Archaeology was also a hobby and he became a trustee of the Archaeological Institute of America. He was awarded the Martha and Artemis Joukowsky Distinguished Service Award for his many contributions. He also served as treasurer of its largest society, The New York Society. He became active in the area of civil rights in the mid-1960's. He joined the Mid-Manhattan Branch of the NAACP and became president. On a state level, he served as treasurer of the New York State Conference of the NAACP branches. On the national level, he was a member of the National Board of the NAACP and a Trustee of the NAACP Contributions Fund. He also Produced a number of fundraising concerts to raise monies to build the NAACP Roy Wilkins Center of New York City. One of his greatest achievements was the celebrated birthday tribute to Duke Ellington which he organized and orchestrated at Madison Square Garden in 1976. He is an alumnus of the Peddie School and in his later years was elected to its board of trustees and served as a vice chairman of the board. He graduated from Williams College and New York University. I am only hearing now of Ira's passing. His enthusiasm and guidance to the NY Society of Archaeological Institute of America was profound and his establishment of our endowment ensures that future students and interested public will have exposure to the things he loved. He was a great mentor to me when I came on to the NY Society board. I will miss him. May his memory be for a blessing.
