ISAAC LEVI Obituary

LEVI--Isaac His family is sad to report the death of Isaac Levi at the age of 88. The eldest son of the first rabbi to serve as a chaplain in the South Pacific in WWII, Levi grew up in New York, Canada, Australia, and Hot Springs, Arkansas where he developed a life-long love for yodeling and the music of Hank Williams. Levi finished his long and distinguished career as the John Dewey Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Columbia University, after stints at The City College of New York and Case-Western Reserve University. The author of seven books and countless articles on decision theory, Levi made a name for himself with his first book, Gambling with Truth. A student of Ernest Nagel at Columbia and a colleague of Sidney Morgenbesser and Henry Kyburg, Levi also served as doctoral advisor to several prominent formal philosophers, including Teddy Seidenfeld, and received an honoray degree from the University of Lund, Sweden. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Judith Rubins Levi, his sons Jonathan and David, his daughter-in-law Stephanie Levi and son-in-law Herve Galbrun, and his grandchildren Rebecca, Gabriel, and Mimi. Burial will be at Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY on January 2 at 11am. The family will sit shiva at 25 Claremont Avenue from December 27-January 1 from 3-6pm.

In 1973 I interviewed for an ancient philosophy position at Columbia (ended up top of the short list, but none of us were hired that year). Levi introduced me to the department and was extraordinarily kind to me. He also made two very sharp remarks (and improvements) about my paper. I've always held him in high regard.

I am very sad to find out about this. I have many fond memories of him in the classroom, as my dissertation advisor, and as my friend. He was a strong influence on my thinking and was a prime example of character for me as well. He was truly a lover of truth and wisdom. I send my heart-felt condolences.

Dear Judy, My heart is so heavy with this news. Isaac was a warm, big-hearted and boisterous man who I will always remember with love. I'll never forget dueting with Isaac on Woody Guthrie songs as we drove to Vermont. Any excuse for a yodel!! You are in my mind in this time.

Isaac is today in our thoughts and hearts and will stay in our memories as long as we live. We are desolated. His passing away is a tragic loss to philosophy and to all his friends all over the world. Our sincerest condolences,
