JACOB JACOBY Obituary

JACOBY--Dr. Jacob (Jack),

78, of New York, NY, died peacefully at home on March 19, 2018, surrounded by his family. Jack is survived by his wife, Renee Jacoby; his children, Dana Jacoby, Robin Jacoby, and Jonathan Jacoby and his wife, Beth; his grandchildren, Brittany and Emily O'Neill, Hank, Gus, and Evelyn Jacoby; and his sister Gloria Pariser and her husband, Bert. Jack was born in Brooklyn on February 17, 1940 to David and Frances Jacoby. Until retiring in November 2017, Jack held an Endowed Chair and was the Merchant's Council Professor of Consumer Behavior and Retail Management at New York University's Stem Graduate School of Business and served on the NYU faculty for over 35 years. He earned his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Michigan State University in 1966. Jack then served as Lieutenant in the United States Air Force until 1965, after which he directed the Consumer Psychology program at Purdue University before joining NYU in 1981. Jack was described as "one of the most prolific contemporary consumer behavior and marketing scholars" in the "Legends of Consumer Behavior" book series dedicated to his contributions. Jack served as past president of the Association of Consumer Research and the Society of Consumer Psychology; gave countless lectures; regularly appeared as an expert witness in federal court; and authored over 165 scholarly articles and over 10 books. He had an endless passion for his work. Jack's greatest pride, however, was his family. He was a devoted and caring husband and father. His extended family (and his dog, Buddy) adored him. He was a loyal friend and mentor, and took joy in helping others Jack's greatest treasure was seeing the happiness and success of those he loved.

Jack, I just ran across this today. I was a student of yours between the years of 1972 and 1977, while you were at Purdue. I learned so much from you. You were a force of nature in your own right (-:). May peace be with you Jack.
PS: I learned about this while trying to understand who the Jacoby was that my son was citing in one of his papers - he is on the faculty of the Booth School at the University of Chicago. It is a crazy Universe Jack; what a delight that you and I are a part of it. Love, Tom

I am greatly saddened by the news of Professor Jacoby's demise. I express my heartfelt condolences to his family. Professor Jacoby's works have inspired research scholars across the world. Much of my own research has been inspired by his works in the area of consumer behavior. Though we never met, I think I could relate to him through his writings. Rest in peace Professor Jacoby.
