JACQUES CARCANAGUES Obituary

CARCANAGUES--Jacques Soho pioneer, passed away in New York City on January 13th. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family throughout the world. Our dear Jacques was born on August 22nd 1937 in Paris, France. After a stint in the French Foreign Service in Brazil, Central America, and Tunisia his adventurous spirit took him to New York City in the early 1970's where he established himself. From his loft he started his legendary business with ethnographic art from Asia, Central America and North Africa. Jacques Carcanagues Gallery became a landmark destination for 40 years in the heart of Soho. His artifacts were sold in museum shops and galleries around the world. The last location on Greene Street closed it's doors February 2013. He lived his work. With a discerning eye he traveled the world to hand select every piece. His exotic global vision, curiosity and passion for collecting both ethnographic and contemporary art created new trends and fashions, but the soul of the business was about spiritual artifacts of many cultures. He will be heart-fully remembered for his unique humor, quick intelligence, his love of beauty and music and his laughing eyes. He is survived by his life partner Sergio Francescon, his sisters Nicole Tirard of Paris, Marie-Claire Chantriaux of Aix-en-Provence, France, and loving nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. His remains will be interred in Paris. There will be no funeral service. A private memorial will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers make a prayer of your choice.
