JAMES CARRINGTON Obituary

CARRINGTON--James H. James H. Carrington, 76, passed away April 30, 2025, in New York, New York. Born in 1949 in Coronado, California to James H.H. Carrington and Kathleen Connell Carrington, Jim was the eldest of five children. He graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., before attending the University of Virginia (UVA) on a football scholarship and graduating with a degree in English. At UVA he pursued acting while also setting ACC records for longest field goal and most points in a game. After graduating in 1971, Jim moved to New York City to attend NYU's graduate Theatre program. Afterward, he performed on and off Broadway, and in the landmark hybrid documentary "Not a Pretty Picture." During that time, he met his current wife, actor Cynthia "Rae C" Wright. Later, Jim relocated to Los Angeles, where his acting credits included "Children of a Lesser God," "The Boys Next Door," and "St. Elmo's Fire" before he shifted his focus to screenwriting. Throughout his career, Jim's screenwriting garnered many accolades, including an Emmy for the TV mini-series, "Joseph." Among his many screenplays were "Coco Chanel," "Caravaggio," "Joe Petrosino," "Fort Apache Napoli," "Fluke," "Iqbal" and the Italian mini-series "Un Caso di Coscienza." After a first marriage ended in divorce, Jim met Antonella Murgia, an actress who hailed from Sardinia, Italy. They moved to Rome, married, and lived there until Antonella's death in 2014. In 2015, he reconnected with Rae C Wright. They married in 2024. Jim is survived by his wife, Rae C Wright; sisters, Wendy Carrington, Nancy (A. Steven) Crown, Kathleen Anderson; brother, Timothy (Cathleen) Carrington; a stepdaughter Sascha Zacharias; fifteen nieces and nephews; over forty cousins; and many close friends and film associates in both America and Italy. May all who experienced Jim, his passion, his kindness, his boundless curiosity and sharp intellect, his generosity and compassion for the disadvantaged, and his joyful appreciation of good food and hearty laughter, carry him with them always.

I remember Gainer as we called him at Gonzaga. When I saw him in the Bionic Man decades ago, that motivated me to go into acting and have been ever since thanks to seeing Gainer on TV! May you perform for the spirits in the sky and kick one over the heavenly goal post!
