Remembering her with such love and respect. I had never met anyone with such a magnetic personality and haven't since! I was smitten by her intellect and charm from the moment I met her in 1997 in Austin, at the University of Texas. When she agreed to become my PhD advisor, she changed my life. Rest in Power, dear Professor Marcus!

"we practice feminist pedagogy here." you will be aware of what others are working on. you will help them with that. the life of the mind need not be competition.

A kind and generous teacher, scholar, and friend. She will be greatly missed.

Jane Marcus introduced me to the work of Rebecca West when I was an undergraduate at the University of Texas, along with the work of Virginia Woolf, Jean Rhys, Doris Lessing, and many others. Those authors became my favorites and I have gone back to them over and over through the years. Professor Marcus was surely not impressed with me as a student, but I was very impressed with her as a teacher and thinker and have often thought about her influence on both my taste and my views on feminism. I am sorry for her family's loss and hope they remember the significance of her life.

I'm heartbroken that Jane Marcus has died. She was my mentor and PhD advisor at the University of Texas in Austin during the 1980s. She was an intellectual beacon to so many of us. She was a formidable role model, who had a deep conviction that her students who cared about works by women deserved her guidance. I hold her memory in my heart, forever, and gratefully.

Jane was a warrior for women's places in the literary world and in the academy, and she influenced many people. She was one of those women--like Grace Paley--who made the world feel to me better because she was in it. But a thing I also admired about her was that, in settings where power accrues from friends in influential positions, she was kind, respectful, and encouraging to women who had no influence and from whom she could expect nothing in return.

Jane was an inspiration to me when she spent a year in the Uk. It was a delight to be in the company of such a brilliant scholar, who was also enormous fun! She also introduced me to Mark McBeth, then at CUNY, as she thought we had interests in common, and we ended up writing a book together. I am sure that this is just one example of many, where her interest in everyone and their work, led to useful connections 'brokered' by the wonderful Jane. I will never forget her!

I am a former Ph.D. student of Jane's and I cannot thank her enough for her guidance and assistance. Those formal words, however, are far too reserved to express the depth of admiration and respect I feel for her. She has been a role model to me and so many others. Her fight for social justice, especially social justice for women, has changed out world and demonstrates a strength to which I can only aspire. Her contributions to our profession are inestimable. She will be deeply mourned but her spirit will live on in the very many whose spirits she touched. I miss her so much.

I am just one of the many, many students who read Prof. Marcus's astonishingly deep and illuminating interpretations of Virginia Woolf novels. My thesis was about The Voyage Out, and Prof. Marcus's books helped me write it, and adore it. She will never be forgotten.

What I loved about Jane was that she was at once BRILLIANT and GLAMOROUS! Thanks for being my mentor and friend . . .

Jane took you into her life in every sense of the word. You learned who she valued and how, why she believed, and got caught up in her passion for social justice, hidden voices, and wanted to take part with her to find ever more connections between everything out there in the past and present that mattered. She was a mentor way beyond ivory tower confines.

Jane was passionate in her support of students and friends. She always reminded us that intellectual work matters. She never gave up, never stopped fighting. Feminist scholarship without Jane's enthusiastic voice seems almost unthinkable.

Jane was an encyclopedic, funny, seemingly indefatigable teacher, activist and mentor who inspired me, and from whom I learned a great deal. I will never forget her. Condolences to Michael, Ben and the rest of her family and friends.

Jane was a firebrand, provocative, audacious, brilliant scholar and advocate of women's rights, representation, and opportunity. A generous and profoundly influential critic, she guided her student's work, encouraged their voices, and believed in the power of education to transform people's lives. The loss is incalculable. She will be missed, but her life and example will live on in her work.
