JANET ALLON Obituary

ALLON--Janet. Janet Wickenhaver Allon, age 63, died on February 17, 2024. The cause was GPA vasculitis. She worked as senior director for public affairs at Global Strategy Group. She also served as associate commissioner at the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment. Born in Abington, Pennsylvania, Allon earned her BA from Wesleyan University and a Master's from Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. She spent most of her career as a journalist, including a stint as a reporter for the City Section of The New York Times. While working as an editor at the Manhattan Spirit, she wrote a series in 1992 about Larry Hogue, a schizophrenic homeless man who symbolized the failures of New York's mental health system, attracting national coverage and leading to change in the State's mental hygiene laws. She continued her crusade to give voice to the voiceless as editor of Street News, a publication written and distributed by the homeless. An avid tennis fan, she was happiest playing doubles with her fellow aficionados or watching a match on TV. She also loved being in nature and could spend hours digging her hands in soil. Most of all, she loved her family fiercely. She is survived by her partner of 11 years, Larry, her children, Jonah, Tess, and Lena, her sister Barbara, brother-in-law Gordon, niece Pamela, nephew Robert, and her yappy terrier mix, Cami.

RIP ... I knew Janet when I worked with her at Manhattan Media. Janet was a lovely charming woman in a sea of sharks. She always had a smile and kind word, and will be missed by many.

I am so saddened by the loss of Janet. We shared a friendship when we were both Mom's of toddlers and grade school kids on the upper west side and became good friends & spent many hours at the 83rd street playground, birthday parties and more. . I can shut my eyes and transport myself to that playground where we sat and talked about important things while caring for our children happily, at the same time. She was the best mother and fun friend, best face painter at birthday parties, talented writer, journalist and activist and always intellectually curious and a devoted Mom. We were trying to make plans to reunite and I am so very sorry this did not happen. I wish her family my deepest condolences. They have a great foundation with Tom as their devoted father and learnings from Janet that I know will help them through this sad time.

I was so lucky to work closely with Janet throughout her time at GSG. She taught me so much as a professional and as a person. It's fitting she's a former reporter - she had so many stories, yet was so humble. She approached everyone with kindness, was incredibly funny, and generous with her wisdom, wit, and care. She was beloved by all of us at GSG, and she is missed every day. I'm incredibly grateful for all that she taught me, all the laughs we shared, and all the ways in which she brightened the days of those around her. I wish our time as office pals could have been much longer, but I am fortunate to have a wealth of memories, lessons, and moments of joy to remember of Janet. She was like no other and will always be remembered, cherished, and loved.

Janet was my first manager at work, but she quickly became more than that. She was my biggest advocate and second mom and guided me both personally and professionally. I am incredibly lucky to have known her, and I miss talking to her and seeing her each week.

Janet, I'll always work hard to make you proud. You were always the first person I wanted to share good news with, whether that was getting my full-time offer or publishing my first op-ed in the school newspaper. I owe everything I know to you. I love you Janet, rest easy.

Janet was a lovely and graceful skater . We grew up together at the Old York Road Skating Club where we trained 8-10 hours a day. This is a picture of banter and I from the ice´n easy ice show program.
