JANET KALSON Obituary

KALSON--Janet Ray,

died on March 21, 2017 after a courageous and determined fight with brain cancer. She fought her illness with the same tenaciousness, strength, valiant effort and courage that she used to fight the landlords and developers who tried unsuccessfully to trample on the rights of her clients. Janet is survived by her beloved daughters, Diane and Stephanie Nurkin, husband Gary Nurkin, mother Dorothy Kalson, siblings CaroIyne (Frank) and Steven (Marilyn) Kalson, numerous loving cousins, friends and colleagues. Well known for her legal successes and her generous sharing of information with colleagues, she put few limits on her working hours. Her clients and associates loved and respected her for her acuity and for her total commitment as well as her open heart. Proud of her professional and liberal traditions, Janet marched in support of labor rights and womens' issues and aided victims of Hurricane Sandy. Classical music and WQXR kept her spirits high. Quoted on numerous occasions in the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the New York Observer, Daily News, New York Law Journal and other New York venues. Janet was Chair of the Judiciary Budget Subcommittee and the Civil Court Committee of the New York City Bar Association, and testified on December 2, 2013 before the NYCLA Task Force on Judicial Budget Cuts. Services will be held at Mt. Sinai Chapel, Fresh Meadows, NY on Friday, March 24, at 12:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ACLU.

To Janet's Family, I didn't get to work very long with Janet (11 months), but we worked on a lot of different cases together in that short time. People liked her. She was smart, and she knew her stuff. She had this laugh that would echo throughout the office, and we'd all look at each other and smile at her funny laugh. She loved practicing law. She loved being a mom. She was special in her way. A loss that young is so sad and heart breaking. But still, in that short time, she made a big difference in a lot of peoples' lives. Many prayers and love to the whole family xoxo

As a resident of the Chelsea Hotel in New York I think I speak for many of my fellow residents when I say that we all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Janet Kalson. She fought tirelessly on our behalf. She was meticulous and tenacious in all the details. Those of us who worked closely with her came to love and honor her generous and moral character. She will be dearly missed.

Janet was a wonderful human being and a great and fierce lawyer. A tireless and ferocious advocate for her clients, almost all of whom were NYC tenants. Tenacious is the word that keeps coming up. Tenacious, passionate, compassionate, loved and respected by her colleagues, friends and adversaries. We will never forget her. As in the movie It's a Wonderful Life, she touched so many lives, the world would have been a different place had she not been in it.
