Jeffrey Sawyer Obituary

1959 - 2022
Jeffrey Bernhard Sawyer, 62, born July 10, 1959, in Manhattan, died unexpectedly of natural causes at home on Monday, January 17, 2022, in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Growing up in Greenwich Village during the 60s and 70s, he loved making mischief with his friends and cousins at his favorite local haunts-the basketball court at Peter Cooper and Washington Square Park. He spent every summer at Boiberik, a Yiddish cultural summer camp in Rhinebeck, New York, which he loved. He graduated from Friends Seminary, a quaker day school in Manhattan in 1977 and attended Brown University, earning a bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1981. He then attended medical school at SUNY Stonybrook, earning his MD in 1985. He completed two medical residencies, the first in Family Medicine at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, followed by a second residency in Psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. As a practicing psychiatrist for over 30 years, he specialized in addiction, mind-body medicine, and integrative health. He was known professionally for his groundbreaking approaches for treating patients and founded the Inspire Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program and the Integrated Primary Care/Behavioral Health Program at North Memorial Hospital where he was Medical Director of Psychiatry and Integrative Care. In addition to providing care at several hospitals and clinics throughout his career, he also had a private practice that evolved into co-founding two new clinics in recent years, which focused on innovative treatments including ketamine, TMS, and psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. He was a tireless advocate for those who could not always advocate for themselves and was intolerant of injustice.

He cared deeply about his patients and was a devoted father, husband, son, cousin, and friend. He had a deep love for music, especially James Taylor and Debbie Duncan, photography, traveling, skiing, water sports, fishing and hunting, trying new restaurants and returning to old favorites, and watching basketball with his kids. Among family and friends, he loved goofing around and had a penchant for practical jokes, which he inherited from his grandmother who was quite a prankster.

He was predeceased by his beloved grandparents Joseph and Evelyn Field, mother Patricia Sawyer, brother Wayne Sawyer, and cousin Herb Sawyer.

He is survived by his wife Karli Koski, his former wife Ruth Taswell and their two daughters Samantha and Ellie Sawyer, son Aubrey Koski, cousins Stacy Romano and Rachel Sawyer, and other devoted family and friends, who will miss him enormously.

Due to COVID-19, a private service was held on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Bet Shalom Synagogue, followed by a virtual Shiva on Saturday, January 22 for family, friends, and colleagues.

Donations may be made in his memory to causes he actively supported, including: Minnesota Recovery Connection, https://minnesotarecovery.org and the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI), https://nami.org.

Dr.Sawyer was an amazing caring and passionate doctor. His efforts and inspirational care exceeded anything I´ve witnessed in my 25 years in medical field. I was extremely lucky to work with him, and spoke to him shortly before he passed away, he sparked my personal fight once again and reassured me that I was on the right path. He touched and positively affected thousands of lives and I am grateful to call him a friend. He will be deeply missed

I met Dr. Sawyer at a very difficult time in my life when I had just been diagnosed at age 50 with ADHD. A necessary and amazing journey through, and he was the right doctor to help me tweak meds, etc., and it was a huge game/life changer! Later on, when I realized I was living with very high anxiety, but was very much against taking additional meds, he suggested I take a course at the University of Minnesota Center for Spirituality and Healing so I could learn to help reduce it through mindfulness practice and yoga. Later on, he also encouraged me to follow through and do some courses with Landmark Worldwide, which was another life changer! combined with everything else, helped me get my sense of self back, and changed me into the happy person I am today. Thank you, Jeff! Clearly your legacy will live on with all the lives you touched.

Dr. Sawyer blessed my life. When I found his business, The Remedy, it seemed too good to be true, but I had a spark of hope big enough to invest my time and energy, anyway. What I found was a deeply compassionate and knowledgeable healer, who figured out what I needed to heal. I'm forever grateful. Please accept my condolences for your loss.

I just talked to Jeff a few months ago and am really saddened by his sudden death. I know we talked about the abrupt changes he would/was making professionally and personally. I had a linkedin exchange with him just a few weeks ago. He was a great friend and colleague and a champion of those in addiction. We shared this passion and now I am at a loss of this great colleague. My thoughts go out to his family.
