JOHAN BOTHA Obituary

BOTHA--Johan.

The Metropolitan Opera mourns the untimely death of tenor Johan Botha, one of opera's greatest heldentenors, who sang 80 performances of ten roles with the company over the last two decades. In 1997, he made his Met debut as Canio in Pagliacci. He was acclaimed for his performances of many of the most difficult tenor roles in the repertory, including the title characters in Don Carlo, Otello, and Lohengrin; Walther von Stolzing in Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg; Florestan in Fidelio; Calaf in Turandot; Radames in Aida; Siegmund in Die Walkure; and, last season, the title role in Tannhauser. We extend our sincerest condolences to his wife and two sons, and to all of his friends and admirers around the world. Peter Gelb, General Manager James Levine, Music Director Emeritus
