JOHN DEMPSEY Obituary

DEMPSEY--John M., III. John "Jack" Dempsey III, 78, passed away May 21, 2024, in Portland, Maine. Born December 12, 1945, to John M. Dempsey II and the late Patricia Madden, he was an older brother to three sisters. Growing up in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, he excelled in swimming and became a Life Scout. Jack became a member of the New York Stock Exchange on March 2, 1972. There, Jack was a role model and mentor to many, building lifelong friendships while earning a reputation for his integrity and generosity. He retired from the NYSE on October 18, 2001, and moved to Maine, a state he'd loved since his days at Birch Rock Camp as a boy. In retirement, he joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2-1, Saco Bay, serving for 16 years as both flotilla commander and division commander. In 2013, he was appointed District Captain North, patrolling the Maine coast, work he found incredibly fulfilling. Jack earned a reputation as the "smartest guy in the room," especially pertaining to his knowledge and love of wine. He also loved cigars, wooden boats, skiing, vintage cars, the New York Yankees, and "Jeopardy." If you find yourself enjoying a great cigar, having exceptional wine, enjoying an evening fire, working on The New York Times crossword, or at peace on the open water, think of Jack and he will be there. He is survived by many friends and family who loved and respected him, as well as his two closest companions: his adored English setters Sadie and Pete.
