JOHN DEWEY Obituary

DEWEY--John Martin, age 83, died January 23, 2019 in New York City, after a brief illness. Son of former New York State Governor Thomas E. and Frances H. Dewey. Brother of Thomas E. Dewey, Jr. and brother-in-law of Ann R. L. Dewey, uncle of Thomas E.L., Elizabeth Dewey Grattan and George R. Great-uncle of Frances, Thomas and Charles Dewey. Born in New York City, he grew up in Albany and Pawling, NY, was a graduate of The Albany Academy, Princeton University 1957 and Harvard Law School 1962. He served as 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army in Germany. Upon graduation from law school, he returned to New York City and was a member of Governor Rockefeller's Moreland Act Commission on the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law (1963-1964) and was subsequently at the then law firm of LeBoeuf, Lamb and Leiby. He continued to live in New York until the time of his death. He was a passionate music lover and opera fanatic, a devotee of The Philharmonic, The Chamber Music Society and The Blue Hill Troupe, among other music organizations. John was the devoted friend of many in the city and many with whom he shared a Hamptons' summer house for decades. A particularly kind and thoughtful man with an acute sense of justice, deeply interested in the lives of his many friends, whom he was always ready to help. He was intense in his convictions, in his independence and in his passion for the New York Mets. He was a gentleman of the old school and will be deeply missed. Services will be held on Monday, February 11th at 11am at St. James' Church, 865 Madison Avenue, NYC 10021. Gifts may be made in his memory to St. James' Church, where he was a longtime parishioner.

I am so sad to hear that John passed away. We shared many wonderful years with friends in our Hampton house. John was a gentleman and a great tennis player. He knew everything about opera and baseball. He was a night owl and extremely kind. They don't raise men like John anymore. Rest in peace dear friend.

I just heard that John had passed away. I was a member of the same summer house in the Hamptons for a number of years. He was a fine gentleman who was kind and generous of spirit. He was also a tremendous tennis player and he loved his New York Times. I have not seen him in a number of years but to hear of his loss truly saddens me. Rest in Peace my dear friend.

Our community has lost a most gracious gentleman and scholar whose warm wit and charm was rare, fine and most singular in nature. The comfort that came from his smiling presence in a room will be sorely missed.

I am very sorry to see this death notice for John Dewey. I have NO idea how good a lawyer he was, but I am sure he was a good and fair one. I do know he was a great and knowledgeable opera goer and baseball follower. It seems just the other day that I was at a reception in Albany where I learned that his father, Thomas E Dewey had died. My condolences to his family members and close friends. I know you will miss John.
