JOHN HARTMAN Obituary

John Sampson Hartman, 1974 - 2023, died at home peacefully with his family in Austin, TX on July 1, 2023 at age 48. John was born in New York City, the son of Marilyn Wright Hartman and William Lawton Hartman, and lived there until 2002. He attended The Buckley School from beginners through graduation in 1990. At Buckley, he excelled academically, winning the Gold Pin in three consecutive years. He was on the wrestling team and ran track. He also served as President of the Student Council his senior year. Most important were the bonds he established with fellow classmates. John then attended Choate Rosemary Hall from which he graduated in 1994. At Choate, John distinguished himself academically, and after completing every math course offered, he did advanced studies with a Choate teacher. In his senior year, John was cited as the top male scholar, receiving excellent grades while taking the largest course load allowed (he wanted to take still another course). His extracurricular activities included cross-country running and biking to an airport for flying lessons which resulted in a successful solo flight. John went on to Yale University where he pursued a strong interest in science and earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. In his first two years, John won the Barge and Runk Prize in Mathematics that was open only to Freshmen and Sophomores. He joined the Theta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity, was elected to the Engineering Honor Society Tau Beta Pi, participated in a solar car project, and formed a computer club. While at Yale, he received summer internships in the Geometry Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and at the Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, CA. While at Yale, John developed a mental illness and after earning his B.S. degree in 2001, his mental illness became more severe. He relocated to Austin, TX, where he lived for nearly 20 years in supportive housing at the Mary Lee Foundation. More noteworthy than his intelligence, discipline, and academic achievements was John's character. He was a person of great integrity and high ethical values, and he had a desire to apply his strong interest in science to benefit the world. John was also extremely considerate and had a great loyalty to his schools and close friends. John is survived by his mother and father living in Austin, TX, and his older brother, W. Wright Hartman, of Middlebury, VT. Gifts in Memory of John S. July 10, 2023

My condolences to your family on your loss. I was John's dean at Choate and mourn his passing. I remember him as bright, vibrant and determined. If he set his mind to something, he did it. Although he carried a very heavy academic load, he was never a grudge or grind. He was joyous about his studies, excited by what he was exploring and learning. I remember when his advisor reported that John had created his own study nook in the basement of the dormitory so he could study quietly without being disturbed or disturbing others. As I worked with John and came to know him, he earned my admiration and respect. He was an outstanding young man, and his passing will be felt by all who knew and loved him. In sympathy, Don Firke
