JOHN INGRAHAM Obituary

INGRAHAM--John Wright. John Wright Ingraham passed away on May 13, 2024 in New York City. He was born to Harold and Mildred (Wright) Ingraham on November 10, 1930 in Evanston, IL and was raised outside of Boston with his two brothers, Harold and Frank. He attended the Noble & Greenough School and later graduated from Harvard University in 1952. He spent three years of service as a U.S. Naval Officer in the Korean War and then graduated from Harvard Business School in 1957. He continued his education with postgraduate studies at the New York University Graduate School of Business throughout the 1960's. In 1957, John began what would become a fulfilling 67-year career at Citibank. He loved his work and held several positions across the investment and commercial banks, focused globally on lending, risk management, and restructuring. Key career accomplishments include his successful reorganization of Penn Central Transportation Company in the 1970's, the navigation of the Latin American debt crisis in the 1980's and establishing Citi's Institutional Recovery Management which is now a model for the industry. He also served on the boards of several public companies. John was a devoted husband of 56 years to his wife, Barbara, who predeceased him in October 2023. On a civic level, John was engaged with the NYC Police Foundation's Crime Stoppers Program, the John King Fairbanks Center, the Naval War College, the Third Church of Christ Scientist and the Schlesinger Library Counsel for the History of Women in America at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, the latter being of particular interest due to his mother's participation in the suffrage movement. He was also a member of the Harvard Club, the Society of Colonial Wars, the St. Andrew's Society, the Robert Burns Society, Robert Morris Associates, the Gulfstream Bath & Tennis Club, the Ocean Club of Florida the Everglades Club and Piping Rock Club. John will be most remembered for his intellectual curiosity, honesty, wit, dedication to his family and his never-ending passion for learning. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly (Ingraham) and Jamie Evans of Malvern, PA, their sons James "Graham", Carter and Penn and by his nieces Suzanne Ingraham, Elizabeth Ingraham, Olivia Ingraham and Tanya Ingraham. A memorial service will be held on September 13, 2024 at 4pm at the Third Church of Christ, Scientist, 583 Park Avenue, New York, NY. Donations in his memory may be made to the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, the Church of Christ Scientist or the Noble & Greenough School.
