John Iselin Obituary

ISELIN--John Jay. The Trustees, staff, and volunteers of Educational Broadcasting Corporation (EBC), licensee of Thirteen/WNET and WLIW New York, are deeply saddened by the loss of John Jay Iselin, a man whose passion and leadership were a transformative force for this institution and all of public television. It was during Jay's remarkable tenure as President that "Channel 13" became an icon of culture and lifelong learning throughout the New York metropolitan community. From 1973 through 1987, Jay built WNET into America's leading producer of programming for the Public Broadcasting Service and led the creation of many of the programs that have given public television its indelible reputation for quality, integrity and independence. "Great Performances", "Live From Lincoln Center", "Nature", "The NewsHour" and "Bill Moyers Journal" all sprang to life under Jay's guidance, each adding an illustrious new chapter to the history of American television. Throughout his life, Jay cultivated the kind of cultural and humanistic vision upon which public television and all our society's highest aspirations rest. We extend our most profound sympathies to Jay's wife, Lea, and to their entire family. Every day, as we work to create media that illuminates and inspires, we honor Jay's phenomenal legacy. We will be forever influenced by his vision. James S. Tisch Chairman Neal Shapiro President and CEO

As a vounteer at WNET during the 1970's and 80's I have fond memories of John's way of making you feel important to the organization. He always had a warm smile to welcome you and he seemed to know us all by name. I was saddened to hear that he passed and want to give my sincerest sympathies to his family.

I am so sorry to be out of town and not able to express in person my great affection and esteem for Jay. I will long remember his good friendship as well as his many civic-spirited contributions both to public television and as the president of Cooper Union.
