John Marchi Obituary

MARCHI--John J. The City University of New York mourns the passing of former State Senator John J. Marchi, who will be forever identified as an enduring champion of The College of Staten Island, its status as a senior college and its current physical campus. Marchi was uniquely sensitive to and supportive of CUNY's overall vital educational mission, its urban orientation and its place in the national marketplace of public higher education. During a career that spanned a half century, he served as the lead sponsor in the State Senate of laws that helped to transform CUNY into the nation's leading urban public university. These included legislation to create the groundbreaking SEEK program; to separate the CUNY community colleges from SUNY's jurisdiction; and to designate CSI and The New York City College of Technology as senior colleges. In 2006, the CUNY Board of Trustees approved the naming of CSI's Building 2N -- which houses the History and Political Science departments -- as John J. Marchi Hall. We extend our sincere condolences to the Marchi family. Benno Schmidt Chairperson Matthew Goldstein Chancellor
