JOHN MULLEN Obituary

MULLEN--John. John (Jack) R. Mullen joined the New York Blood Center (NYBC) Board of Trustees in 1982 and served as an outstanding Trustee, Chairman, supporter, and friend of the Center, the Board, and senior leadership for 35 years. Jack served as Chairman of the Board from 2000-2003 and Chair of the Compensation and Human Resources Committee from 2004-2017. He was Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) until 1997, and a proud alumnus of Notre Dame ('53) notably serving as Chair of the University of Notre Dame's Kroc Institute of International Peace Studies Advisory Board, a Board that provides advice and guidance to the Institute's director and executive staff and supports the development of Institute resources. Along with his family, Jack established The John R. and Diane Mullen Family Endowment to provide ongoing support for two Ph.D. fellowships at the Institute. While at J&J, Jack took the leadership role in defining the Company's rapid, and now lauded as heroic, response to the Cyanide- laced Tylenol product tampering scare, believing that people are more important than profits, demonstrating at work, his deep felt integrity, ethics, and morality. Jack resided in Spring Lake, New Jersey and Longmont, Colorado, and he is survived by his children - sons, Michael K., Shannon P. and his wife Eileen C.; daughters, Paddy Mullen, Neilli Mullen Walsh and her husband Peter, and Mary Killeen Mullen - as well as many grandchildren. Leadership, enthusiasm, integrity, and commitment are but a few of the extraordinary characteristics Jack lived every day and ones widely demonstrated in his four decades of service to NYBC and its Board of Trustees. We are honored to recognize the indelible impact of his dedication to our mission and his lasting legacy of selfless service.

Jack loved and served his family, his country, J&J and Notre Dame. He was an extraordinary man and a great friend. We served on the Notre Dame Alumni Board in the early `70s. He has been my friend, my mentor and role model-and a loyal son of Notre Dame. God Bless you Jack.
