JOHN SCOTT Obituary

SCOTT--John Gavin.

John Scott, LVO, D.Mus honoris causa, June 18, 1956-- August 12, 2015. The Rector, Wardens, and Vestry of Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, on behalf of the parish, announce the death of their beloved Organist and Director of Music (2004-- 2015). He is survived by his wife, Lily Ardalan Scott; his children, Emma and Alex, and their mother, Jane Lumsden; and his sisters Judith Schatunowski and Helen Church. Lily Scott is expecting their first child in September 2015. John was born in 1956 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, UK, where he became a Cathedral chorister. While still at school he gained the diplomas of the Royal College of Organists and won the major prizes. In 1974, he became Organ Scholar of St. John's College, Cambridge under Dr. George Guest. John made his debut in the 1977 Promenade Concerts in the Royal Albert Hall, playing Reubke's Sonata on the 94th Psalm. He was the youngest organist to appear as a soloist in the Proms. On leaving Cambridge, John was appointed Assistant Organist at London's two Anglican Cathedrals: St. Paul's and Southwark. During this time he won first prizes from Manchester and Leipzig J.S. Bach International Organ Competitions in 1978 and 1984 respectively. In 1985, John became Sub-Organist of St. Paul's Cathedral, and in 1990 he succeeded Dr. Christopher Dearnley as Organist and Director of Music. During his 26 years at St. Paul's, he was responsible for the nine weekly choral services, concerts, and for the music at a number of high profile events including the service to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002 for which he wrote the anthem, Behold, O God Our Defender, based on Psalm 84. He also directed the music at the memorial service at St. Paul's after 9/11. John was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order, a personal gift from the Queen, in recognition of his work at St. Paul's Cathedral. In the summer of 2004, John was appointed Organist and Director of Music at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, where he directed the Choir of Men and Boys until his death. John worked tirelessly with the boys of Saint Thomas Choir School, the only choral boarding school in North America. An exceptional choral trainer, John was monumental in shaping the lives of young choristers and generations of church musicians. His Missa Dies Resurrectionis has been performed each Easter at Saint Thomas since its premiere in 2011. John conducted the Choir of Men and Boys in numerous recordings including Mozart's arrangement of Handel's Messiah and Faure's Requiem. In 2015, John and the Choir of Men and Boys began a major collaboration with Resonus Classics which recently produced a new recording of Motets by J.S. Bach. At Saint Paul's John played a complete cycle of the organ works of J.S. Bach in 2000 and followed this in subsequent years with the organ symphonies of Vierne and Widor, as well as the complete works of Franck and Buxtehude. At Saint Thomas, he performed complete cycles of the organ works of Buxtehude in 2007, Messiaen in 2008, and the six organ symphonies of Louis Vierne in 2009. His most recent solo recital at Saint Thomas took place in June, 2015 with a program of works by J.S. Bach that was based on a recital by Mendelsohn at the Thomaskirche, Leipzig in 1840. John was equally renowned for inspiring church musicians to his impeccable standards. For the last several years, John has spearheaded Saint Thomas Church in one of its most ambitious projects to date: the building of a new pipe organ by Dobson Pipe Organ Builders of Lake City, IA. The new organ, which is expected to be completed in 2018, has already been named the Irene D. and William R. Miller Chancel Organ in honor of Dr. John Scott. He insisted that Bach's motto, Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God alone) be carved in the new organ case of the Miller-Scott Organ as a reminder of the importance of liturgical music. As an organist, John performed on five continents, premiered many new works written for him, and worked with various specialist ensembles. In recent years he performed recitals at the Thomaskirche, Leipzig; Notre Dame, Paris; Disney Hall, Los Angeles; Merton College, Oxford; and Royal Albert Hall, London. He once said "I envy other musicians who can take their instrument with them when they travel. For me, it's a new instrument each time". In addition to his work as a conductor and organist, John has published many choral compositions and arrangements and has jointly edited two compilations of liturgical music for the Church's year published by Oxford University Press. His numerous organ recordings include the sonatas of Elgar, organ music by William Mathias, Durufle and Mendelssohn, as well as two discs of Dupre. He also recorded the solo organ part in Janacek's Glagolitic Mass with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The funeral service will be at Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue; the date and time will be posted at saintthomaschurch.org. Donations may be made in John Scott's memory to the MillerScott Organ Fund. Please make checks payable to Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue; 1 West 53rd Street; New York, NY 10019-5496. The Reverend Canon Carl F. Turner, Rector Kenneth F. I am very saddened to hear of John Scott's passing. On the times I was in New York City, I used to visit John in the organ area. Since I sing in a choir in Jacksonville, Fla., we discussed music , unfortunately not nearly enough. I had a Sunday morning radio concert of sacred music here in Jacksonville, and have played many of John Scott's recordings with St. Paul's, London, and Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue. He was a musician with international acclaim. His choir was superb. And when he played organ at Saint Thomas, it was delightfully loud so that I find myself singing the hymns in a big cathedral manner. May you rest in peace, John Scott, and know many worldly musicians and lovers of music will leave a place for you in our hearts.
God bless Lily and family.

I first met John at Christ Church St. Laurence Sydney on Easter Sunday morning 1978 when he came as an organ scholar with St. John's College Cambridge. To say he was an outstanding musician and person is an understatement as he was so very gifted yet so humble. Despite his extremely busy schedule he always found the time to reply to any correspondence. Apart from music we enjoyed our banter about the Cricket matches between Australia and England! My wife Carole and I always enjoyed attending John's concerts and he was always so warmly friendly. He will be greatly missed by so many. Our sympathy to Lily and all his family.

I remember John as a 14 year old. I was 13. Friday evening at the Wakefield Cathedral Youth club. It was a musical evening. We all did our bits and John, 14 year old John, sat and played entirely Debussy's 'Claire du Lune' from memory. I will never forget that evening. John will never bee forgotten and through his wonderful accomplishments in music will live on - the the glory of God alone..

My heart goes out to your family and your church family of which I have been a part,
The earth has lost an extremely talented man but your music must have been desperately needed in heaven.

As chairman of St Anne's Lutheran church Music Society by St Paul's in the City of London, I met John many times and on Sunday evenings after both churches had completed Evensong we all assembled in the Cock Tavern to unwind. John had a score or more years to come and this sudden loss is a terrible tragedy for global church music.

I have long been impressed by John through his numerous recordings, particularly his Dupre and Mendelssohn organ recordings and the English Anthem series made at St. Paul's. I have also had the privilege of hearing him perform live in the States a few times. I will always remember the last time I heard him, playing a recital at the Church of the Advent in Boston for the 2014 AGO National Convention. The recital was preceded by a magnificent choral vesper service. It was a very hot, humid evening and the church was not air conditioned. Just before the service, John and Lily walked in and slipped into the pew at the side of the aisle, just in front of us, appearing to make an effort to remain inconspicuous. John seemed unaffected by the heat and was completely involved with the worship service, singing, kneeling, and otherwise participating at every level. At times he would turn to Lily with a little smile, obviously pleased with a lovely musical phrase he had just heard. These actions demonstrated his deep faith and love of music. That he was so obviously moved by the service, and then calmly walked to the organ to brilliantly perform nearly two hours of challenging repertoire was an inspiration on multiple levels, and a lesson in grace that will always remain with me. May God comfort Lily, their soon-to-be-born child, and the entire family in this time of terrible loss.

I had the privilege of meeting John in June of 1998, I was on a trip to the UK and it was after Evensong. He was so generous to have given me some time with him at the Organ. It is so sad to lose such a talented individual and so young. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

While I did not know Mr. Scott personally, I was always very impressed with his extraordinary musicianship, brilliance and virtuosity at the organ. A most talented artist which I was always looking forward to hearing. His programming was exceptional, the sheer scope of his artistic range, especially his presentation of the all the L. Vierne symphonies at St. Thomas 2 years ago, all of which I will remember always. He served his art, his parish, his chosen instrument with the highest distinction.
The musical world lost a very special human being and artist. A most tragic loss - my deepest condolences to his entire family.

May he rest in peace.

I recently had the incredible privilege to attend a concert by Mr. Scott this past June at First Presbyterian Church of Glens Falls, NY. The music was absolutely rapturous. So I was stunned to read the news today and wish to share the joy this man brought to all our hearts that afternoon and to send my most sincere condolences to all his friends and family.

Dear St Thomas's. I was so deeply saddened to learn of John's death and myself and all my fellow church musicians back in England mourn the loss of such an awe inspiring, truly gifted musician and also such a wonderful, true gentleman. John's family especially his dear wife, are so much in my heart thoughts and prayers at this truly sad time. John lived life to the full and gave so much joy and inspiration both to me, who had the absolute honour to audition for him for a position in St Pauls Cathedral Choir, but to all my fellow professional church musicians around the globe. I am reminded of the psalm O God My Heart Is Ready, My Heart Is Ready when I think of John and his truly legendary contribution to the world of Church Music. A gigantic light has just gone out in the church music world, but John will never, ever be forgotten. Bless you John, for all that you are and were. John you have ran the great race, be now at peace. Lord receive John into your loving arms and may perpetual light always shine upon him. Watch over John's loving family, guide and protect them in the days ahead and bring them comfort at this truly tragic time Amen.

TTed and I are deeply saddened and shocked by the sudden demise of our musical director Dr John Scott, news of which we heard here in Salzburg where are attending part of the annual festival.. Ted is happy that he was able to attend the last concert given by John in June which he describes as 'a virtuosic performance, deeply moving. As a committed Anglican St Thomas feels like my spiritual home. Ted who was brought up in the Presbyterian tradition admits that his love for ST THomas has much to do with its music of which DR Scott was the main proponent. We mourn his loss with our fellow parishioners at St Thomas and the wider church musical community the world over. May his soul rest in peace.

John and I first came across each other over a number of years in the 1980's when we played for Sir David Willcocks massed scratch Messiah's in the Albert Hall in aid of the British Heart Foundation. We were part of the "nuclear" orchestra playing continuo together. Later through the Worshipful Company of Musicians and its close links to St Paul's we saw each other again until a final chance meeting at St Thomas a couple, not years back. A wonderful, feature and sensitive musician and the best of all men. Much missed. Chris Lawrence

I was privileged to be Precentor of Wakefield Cathedral UK when John was organ scholar aged 15. Even then he had the most amazing and prodigious technique and musicianship. So sad to have lost a friend who united heaven and earth through his music and who lit up the lives of those who knew him. May God grant him rest and comfort his wife Lily, his family and the countless friends whose lives he touched and inspired

John Scott came to Australia in 1996 for the RSCM and left an indelible impression as a brilliant organist and director of choirs. He was also lots of fun and accepted a bushman' hat with corks all around it. What a tragedy this spectacular musician has died so young. Our sympathy to his family and colleagues. MMatthews ARSCM

I would watch and listen as he rehearsed the choir before Evensong. He would stop them, give correction and when they sang - it WAS so much better. He played the organ magnificently and played works most of his peers could never master. He was genius and at his peak when he died. My heart breaks for his wife Lily. I had the fortune to meet him at a Church supper - he sat next to me. Very charming.

I have gained a lot of inspiration listening to recordings, and watching videos of John playing the organ, and directing the choirs in St Thomas New York, and St Paul's London. I have visited both churches, so feel a special connection with each, particularly St Thomas Choir School, where my wife and I stayed there for a week. R.I.P.
