JOHN SELIG

SELIG--John (Jack) J., age 87, of Bridgeport, CT and formerly of Harrison, NY, beloved husband of the late Marilyn Baginsky Selig, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2024 surrounded by his family. Jack was born in New York on March 4, 1937 to the late Richard and Nannette (nee Jandorf) Selig. He attended The Choate School, Brown University, and Harvard Law School briefly before serving in the Marine Corps Reserve. Traveling in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Jack visited many remote places including his favorites: Manaus, Brazil; Lake Titicaca, Peru and Bolivia; Hong Kong; Egypt and the Nile River; and Nepal, where his friends included one of the Dalai Lama's brothers and pilots flying in from Afghanistan. He also hitchhiked almost the entire perimeter of Ireland, drove a Lambretta scooter through Europe, and hitchhiked across the US to work for the Canadian government laying the distant early warning (DEW) radar lines on the Pacific coastal ranges. After starting in his family's furniture business in the Bronx, Pisers, he spent over 40 years in the real estate industry, first in commercial leasing and then in commercial sales for firms including Helmsley-Speare and ABS Partners. Jack met Marilyn, his wife of 55 years, on a blind date in 1962. They were engaged four days later and married in three months. Jack and his family were early members of Beach Point Club in Mamaroneck and many of his happiest memories were of spending time there. Jack was deeply interested in the environment and fly fishing, and was a member of Theodore Gordon Flyfishers and Riverkeeper, both non-profits formed to promote the protection of rivers and streams. He also spent years raising money for the United Way of Westchester County. Jack loved adventures in both food and travel and, with Marilyn, was an enthusiastic member of The Wine & Food Society of New York. Most of all, Jack loved family and was a devoted and loving son, husband, and dad to an extended close-knit family. Survivors include his children, John J.M. Selig (Laura Duty Selig) of San Mateo, CA, and Kathryn Selig Brown (Douglas) of Fairfield, CT; five grandchildren, Dustin and Jonas Brown and Lila, Samuel and Dahlia Selig; and his special friend and companion for the last seven years of his life, Virginia Rowen, after Marilyn's death in 2017. Jack is predeceased by his brother, Richard (Dick) Selig Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests contributions in Jack's memory be made to Theodore Gordon Flyfishers or Riverkeeper.
