Dear Esther:
We just learned the sad news that John has crossed the Rubicon of Life.
John will be always remembered as a great scientist. His fundamental contributions established foundations and helped to advance the development of contemporary nanomagnetism and spintronics.
Personally, we will remember John always as a very great friend. During his visits at SFU and numerous scientific meetings we enjoyed sharing life experiences and exchanging views on current events. This will always be deeply engraved in our memories. His presence of mind and clarity of thought were exceptional and will be missed.
Dear Esther, we are deeply saddened by your loss. Johns legacy will always be with us, he will never be forgotten.
Our most sincere condolences,
Bret and Anna

Dearest Esther,
It is such a shock to hear that John passed away a few days ago. John has been a continued source of inspiration for so many scientists. It is true to say that I cannot think of any paper published here in the field of magnetism that does not quote a former or recent work of John. John was deeply respected, not only as a scientist, but also as the delicious man he was. I, personally have from my first encounter with John, been fascinated by his kindness, his tolerance to other people. John's mind was huge, immensely fast and, somehow, witty. I have always loved conversing with him. I shall remember him for ever. With empathy and deep respect,
Jacques Miltat, Paris
