JOHN STEINFIRST Obituary

STEINFIRST--John Freund, died at his home in San Francisco, September 24, 2025 after a brief but valiant fight against cancer. John celebrated his 85th birthday on August 22 with family and friends. John was married to Sharon Collins for 33 years. His family includes his twin sister Susan (deceased March 19, 1997), his older brother Richard, a nephew, two nieces, 10 great nieces and great nephews, a great, great niece and his beloved dog, Chauncey. John had a joy for life that was infectious. He delighted in sharing his love of art, music, travel, food, and good company with his numerous and dear friends. John and Sharon were supporters of many cultural institutions around the Bay Area. He was a good friend and mentor to many. John earned a Master's in Social Work from New York University, a Master's in Business from Columbia University and a B.A. from Duke University. His career in social work and social program advocacy included many leadership roles, culminating in his term as CEO of The Fred Finch Center, Oakland, CA, from 1998 - 2008. He went on to serve as interim CEO for several Bay Area non-profit agencies and acted as an expert witness. John was active and effective in policy making and legislative changes in California and New York in support of children's, youth and family services. Donations in John's memory may be directed to Fred Finch Youth and Family Services, Development Department, 3800 Coolidge Avenue, Oakland, California 94602. www.FredFinch.org A celebration of John's life will be held in the future.
