JOHN TITMAN Obituary

TITMAN--John DeWitt, Jr., died peacefully of natural causes in Rye, NY on January 2, 2021. He was 93 years old. Born in Montrose, PA John grew up in Binghamton NY. He attended Princeton University and graduated in 1951. John began his career at Time-Life Inc in "Personnel Employee Services". He recruited the best and the brightest. Among those he hired were David McCullough, Joseph Heller and John McPhee. John transitioned to HBO where he became Director of Facilities and oversaw the construction and renovation of HBO buildings all over the world. When John finally retired from Time Warner he was the most senior employee of the company. John was a resident of Brooklyn Heights for nearly 70 years. He served on the Packer Collegiate Institute Board of Directors. He served as president of the Evergreen Cemetery Board of Directors. He served as president of the Heights Casino where, as a devoted and enthusiastic squash player he played a regular game of squash on Thursday nights for over 50 years. His pro bono work included advising The Brooklyn Youth Chorus's purchase and building of their now permanent home in Cobble Hill. For decades John enlisted campers every summer for his childhood summer camp, Camp Susquehannock, never losing sight of the enormous amounts of fun he had doing team sports near a pristine lake. John took many families and friends on hiking, camping and cross-country ski trips in the Catskills and the Adirondacks. He was always generous spreading his enjoyment of the wilderness. John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Narcissa Hargroves Titman, his daughters Hollis Scott and Susan Bruce Hedges (Peter Hedges, son-in-law), grandchildren Emma Scott, Harper Scott, Simon Hedges and Lucas Hedges. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to The Sierra Club, an organization John believed in and supported.
