I'm just learning about this via a call from Susie Klaw. I'm so sorry to hear and want to give all my love to you, Mira, and you Adam and Danny and your families.
I loved my times with Johnny--his talk, his interest in the various things I was interested in, his beautiful fine poetry, metric and non-, his kindness to my mom and dad and sister, his presidings over Passover dinners (best ever), his wonderful quiet presence.

Dear Mira and Family:
I am so sorry to hear about JVD's passing.
As you know, I worked with him at Great Ideas Today. I count him as one of the best men I have ever known. He was funny, witty, kind, and was known to be one of the best editors around. His colleagues at Britannica valued him very much and loved working with him. He was so kind and helpful to those of us who worked as his editorial assistants, boosting our careers and supporting us as we moved on.
He will be remembered fondly.

John was a most kindly and scholarly man -- slow to criticize, quick to laugh, and eager to talk about whatever interested one. Wit and decency were in his every word and gesture.

It was my privilege to work with John on The Great Ideas Today for several years. He was a modest, charming, erudite man who seemed to me the embodiment of the American scholar.

John Van Doren loved expolring worlds in books and arts, but even more he loved sharing them with students, friends and family. He had a special affinity for spending time in nature with his many grandchildren in Connecticut. May his family enjoy his writings and many good memories.

Dear Mira and Family,
So sad to hear the news of John's passing. I know how much he was loved by all of you and to some extent I'm sure you are relieved that he is no longer suffering. He was a real delight to know and I'm sorry I wasn't able to see him in these last two years. Much love to all of you. Will call during the week. Yours Genya

John Van Doren was the very best instructor I had at Brandeis. Recognizing that I was shy and lacking in confidence, he drew me out, helping me to see that I was good at literary criticism. He was the reason I became an English professor.
