My memories of Jonathan are from before the adventures presented in this obituary even begin. I grew up with Jonathan in the 60's when our families both had summer vacation homes in Westhampton Beach. I believe I met Jonathan's grandfather - the inventor of the electric blanket and the toaster oven - and the genius behind the ArtKraft Straus' super billboards in Times Square only once - but that was enough to leave a lasting impression. I definitely remember his father, Mel, and the red hat he always wore at the beach. You couldn't miss him. I also remember his sister, Tama. One summer, Jonathan's father bought him a Sunfish sailboat. It was pretty much a surfboard with a yellow striped sail. Anyone on the shore couldn't help but notice that yellow striped sail zipping back and forth across the water - all day. My family had a large sailboat and that boat - plus Jonathan's sense for adventure - is what started our friendship. Jonathan loved sailing that boat. And it made for many great memories. We lost touch at around 14 years old. Funny, without the white beard and glasses, he looks the same. My condolences to his wife, Helen; his daughter, Julie; Tama; and the rest of his family. RIP Jonathan.

Jonathan was such a generous and caring friend and mentor. Words are inadequate to describe the positive difference he made in my life. And I know he did the same for so many other people. He was a living example of the Aloha Spirit. I enjoyed watching him play music and listening to him talk about musicians. And I was honored to attend some of the amazing parties he and Helen hosted for a diverse cast of characters on Maui. Thank you for everything, Jonathan!
