I did my internship with Jonell at essence in 1995. She taught me so much. I adored and respected her. I have been trying to find her for years to contact her. I'm heart broken. I had no idea. She absolutely changed my life for the better. I am a better person for knowing her and experienced things I would have not normally experienced if it hadn't been for her. She even drove to RI where I was in college and came to visit and take me to lunch. She went above and beyond to mentor me.

Jonell,
My favorite and dearest high school friend. Cass Technical High School, in 1961, was a very special part of becoming young women in the Home Economics Department. You were destined to become a stepping stones in our future. We fondly, greeted each other as "Feather", each morning as learned we how to prepare a wide variety food. You were a stylish, classy, and intelligent graduate from one of the finest high schools in the country. The last time we met I teased you about your cooking skills; after years of separation, you laughed, and we shared our days of fun and friendship. You will be missed by all of the "Technicians" and the people you touched and loved.

I admired you from afar as a writer and black woman. Thanks for the inspiration, the wisdom and for respecting--cherishing--our culture. Thank you for adding value to our legacy. You will not be forgotten.

Dear Aunt Jonell,
Your passing still has not registered in my mind nor heart. It seems like yesterday that we chatted about a vast range of subjects including economics and politics and especially food. You will always be remembered and your legacy cherished in the hearts of our children and children's and beyond. John and I and the children will miss you and we will anxiously await our moment to dine with you at heaven's table. Each year on February 14 we watch our wedding video. We were just smiling a month ago about seeing you. Thank you for sharing Harriette Cole with us as we planned a special day from the wisdom found in her "Jumping the Broom" guide. Rest well in the bosom of the Creator and speak softly among the angels as you share with them your dreams of a brighter day for those that you mentored and for those that you loved. As you recall Kahlil Gibran is one of my favorite writers. At our wedding you assisted with the cutting of the cake and the reading of Gibran ' s lesson on Love. Aunt Jonell you spoke to us on love through your life and through your spirit that will forever remain intertwined in ours. Hotep. Selah. Ashe. Amen.

My dear sister,
I cannot believe that you are gone. We spent so many years together sharing this journey called life, with enthusiasm, hope, joy and determination. You were such an inspiration and a rock for me. I couldn't have asked for a greater supporter. When I didn't believe in myself, you were there to remind me of my abilities, accomplishments and skills. Your faith in God and in our own creativity will remain like the quiet fire that you were in my being and in that of so many others.
May you rest in the Lord's arms, as sweetly as you graced us in this world.
I will never forget you.
Love, Harrriette
