JOSEPH KARTIGANER

KARTIGANER--Joseph. Joseph "Joe" Kartiganer, a distinguished trusts and estates attorney, passed away on July 17, 2024, in Maine. Born in Berlin on June 5, 1935, he and his family fled Nazi persecution to the United States in 1939. Joe graduated from City College of New York and Columbia University School of Law. After serving in the U.S. Army, he began his legal career at White & Case in 1960 and later led the trusts and estates department at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett until his retirement in 1999. Joe held leadership roles in the American Bar Association, American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, American College of Tax Counsel, and the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law. He mentored many junior lawyers, authored numerous legal articles and treatises, and lectured at Columbia and Yale Law Schools. He had a passion for technology, the arts, politics, chess, and wordplay, and enjoyed golfing, tennis, and travel. Known for his wit and warmth, he maintained close ties with family and friends worldwide. Joe is survived by his wife, Audrey Amdursky; daughters Deborah Kartiganer and Alison Kartiganer; son-in-law Constantin Tanno and grandchildren Nicholas and Christina Tanno; and son-in-law Jonathan Geibel and grandson Christopher "CJ" Geibel. He was predeceased by his parents, Harold and Lilly Wolkowitz Kartiganer, and sister, Esther Kartiganer. A celebration of his life will be held in New York City at a later date.
