JOSEPH SILVERMAN Obituary

SILVERMAN--Joseph Elias, beloved son, brother, uncle, husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on August 4th at the age of 91. Raised by Michael and Yvette in Laurelton, Queens, with his older brother, Avi, Joe attended PS-156, Columbia Grammar School, University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Law School. He served in the Korean War, where he was hit by lightning in an open field and emerged with minimal injury. Early in his career he served as General Counsel at Block Drug Company and was then founding partner at Cohen Silverman Rowan, a promotional marketing law firm in Manhattan. But his true life's work was as a New Yorker. Born in 1931, the same year the Empire State Building opened, he was educated by every street, subway, museum, movie theater, book store and bagel shop in the city. He saw Willie Mays at the Polo Grounds and Hamilton at the Public Theater; attended happenings at the Tanager Gallery and devoured blintzes at B&H Dairy; and never tired of browsing the stacks of the Strand. His was an interesting life, well-lived. Joe is survived by Marylin Silverman, his daughters Lisa and Jennifer, his son-in-law, Peter, and his grandchildren Esme, Willa and Oscar. In lieu of flowers, please read a good book. Or donate to Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preser-vation.
