JUDD JONES Obituary

JONES--Judd. Actor, singer, dancer died peacefully at home March 9. He was 79. Born and raised in Alabama, Judd arrived in New York in 1954 with stars in his eyes. His booming bass baritone voice had been nurtured in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to a USO and fell in love with performing. "But if you want to make it on Broadway, you can't just sing," Chita Rivera told him. "You have to learn to act and dance." Judd toured for five years as Chino in West Side Story. He performed on Broadway, Off Broadway, in regional theater and with the Lincoln Center Repertory Co. His one-man shows celebrated Paul Robeson and Bert Williams. Judd adored his showbiz friends: Stokes, Keith, Martin, Tommy, Jeremy, Whoopi, Ron, Mike, Georgia, Julie, Jack, Brenda, Mary Louise, Christopher, Emily. He worshipped his divas: Leontyne, Renee, Bernadette, Patti, Audra, Betty, Barbra. He taught and mentored Ta'u, Patricia, Morgan, Chico, Christopher. After a moving Black History Month reading from Martin Duberman's slave chronicle "In White America," a sobbing girl apologized to the white-haired Judd for his suffering. "Oh, my dear, I'm not that old," he said. "I am an actor and I have lived a wonderful life in New York City." Judd is survived by his brother Edward. He is mourned by friends, neighbors and the Jones family. A memorial service will be held April 10, 7 pm, Good Shepherd Faith Church, 152 W. 66. Contributions may be made to Actors Fund, NYPL's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Assn of Tenants of Lincoln Towers.

Judd and our vocal quartet, The University Four, perfomed together on stage and nightclubs in NYC in the early 60s. His work ethic and smiling face always encouraged us. His talent was superior. May he enjoy his new stage and role...

Judd Jones was our Drama Department teacher during senior year 1972-1973 for
the H.S. of Performing Arts Class of 1973. He was an amazing teacher and human being...his generosity of spirit, compassion and patience were unparalleled. We were extremely fortunate to have been graced with his dynamic talent as he prepared us for our annual Spring Drama Festival and life in the Arts. He encouraged and nurtured each and every one of us refusing to accept the limitations some of us placed upon ourselves. He also invited us to his one-man show where he exuberantly displayed his awesome singing, acting and dancing abilities! After that experience, drama class was never quite the same...he could do no wrong!

Judd was a huge supporter of theater. I'd never met anyone with such a passion for the art form. When I started my theater company, he met our first performance by taking the entire cast in a limo to his apartment where he shared an amazing meal of fried chicken and sweet potato pie. And working with him on Country Girl for an audition was an absolute gift. Judd will not be forgotten!

What an inspiring enthusiast of the performing arts he was. When "I Want Magic" was a new recording, Judd introduced me to the marvelous Renee Fleming.

Judd was always incredibly supportive and generous to me. I've never met someone who loved music and theatre as much as he did. I'll forever be thankful for our friendship.
