Julie was an extraordinary young adult when I knew her, Had always hoped to re-connect and sorry our paths never had a chance to cross again. I wish her eternal peace and hope she is smiling on everyone who knew and cared about her.

What devastatingly sad news. I fondly remember my years with Julie at the reinvention of Details: we stressed, laughed, cried, got angry, but ultimately found joy in giving birth to something new together. I know she'll be missed by all whose paths she crossed.

Years ago I worked at Food & Wine. Not for long but I do remember Julie as my boss. Intimidating sometimes, but also funny, smart, stylish and poised. I remember that red pen on correspondence, great shoes and a passion for books. Her correcting me -"we don't say, 'bon appetit!' - we say, 'enjoy your food and wine!'". And her point of view on the misuse of the word "incredible".

Julie's had high standards so a compliment was truly a compliment and I've never forgotten the ones she gave me.

To my old college classmate Kelly, my deepest sympathies to you and your family.

"Ohhh... I am so, so sad to hear that Julie passed away so early and so young! We both attended Beginners Showcase in New Hampshire in the summer of 1974. I was 11 and I remember really looking up to Nancy - an incredibly sweet, smart, fun, lovely, talented and warm 17 year old young woman. Sending lots of love to Julie's family, friends and fellow admirers." - Norma Bowles (Los Angeles, CA)

Well sweet, dear old friend, I love seeing your face here in this guest book, what a great photo of you. I wish I could of seen you in the flesh and blood just one more time as I'm sure everyone does. But just talking to you like this brings you into my heart and warms the feelings for you. So many memories stirred by this happening. I remember the last time we had dinner together several years ago with Susie and my friend Bruno( whom I thought you might hit it off with) you were telling me how content you were and the one thing you wish you had in life was a partner to travel with. Well you have the partner to travel with now. You take me all the way back to Grafflin school ; you running down the hill with Cathy Cummings, your waist long ,dirty blonde hair fling behind your brainy head and girlishly awkward body. Come visit frequently and lets talk more, happy traveling. I love you , my condolences go out to your family

I owe more than I can say to Julie, and our lives were intertwined. I have lost of piece of my own being with Julie's going--as I know must also be true for her family and many, many friends. She was a generous soul.

Julie,

Of all the people I have lost contact with, you were someone I imagined meeting again after thirty years. I have never forgotten how funny and cynical and caring you could be all in the same charming moment.

Julie, you are my mentor and my friend. You taught me how to buy a high quality shoe, how to write a speech, to always leave a work event early and without drinking too much, to never gossip (unless it was really interesting), how to wrap a proper present, the beauty of a hardbound desk diary, to have poise and grace, to always follow my heart and dreams. You taught me how to be a grown-up, to be a lady, almost as good as you. You have forever changed me and I will always be grateful for the time we spent together. May you rest in power. I love you very much.

It was my pleasure to have worked with Julie McGowan for a decade or so at Food & Wine. Memory often centers on details, and one thing that immediately comes to mind about Julie was her ability to distill the amply witty and precise aspects of her personality into the most wonderful notes. I still have a couple tucked away in a drawer. They always hit that elusive “sweet spot” between the erudite and the effortless, and receiving one always felt special. She even gave a delightful speech about the importance of note writing at one of our annual sales meetings, which stands out as the only motivational speech I have been able to retail in any detail beyond a week's time. …A note to Julie, we will all miss you very much.
