KINGSLEY ERVIN Obituary

ERVIN--Kingsley. The faculty, trustees and families of Grace Church School mourn the loss of Kingsley Ervin, our eighth headmaster. Kingsley served Grace Church School with distinction from 1977 to 1994 and transformed the school into one the most respected independent schools in New York City. A leader in the world of independent schools, he served as president of the Elementary Heads Association of the United States, the Guild of Independent Schools and member of the NYSAIS Board and Commission of Accreditation. Kingsley brought passion to everything he did. He changed Grace Church School and changed the lives of a generation of its students and teachers. All who knew, admired and loved him will miss his lively presence and quick wit. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 9 West Wheelock, Hanover, NH, on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at 11am. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers, may be given to: Upper Valley Haven, 713 Hartford Avenue, White River Junction, VT 05001 or the GO Project, Grace Church School, 86 Fourth Avenue, New York NY 10003. George P. Davison, Head Douglas H. Evans, Board Chair Grace Church School

I was just reflecting on Mr. Ervin who was the headmaster when I was a student at GCS in the early 1980s. He taught our civics class in 6th grade and I still recall his teaching about the difference between Power and Authority -- a distinction I still find important.
