LARRY HORNER Obituary

HORNER--Larry Dean.

Passed away at his home in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico on December 29, 2015. He was 81. The cause was heart failure. Mr. Horner was born on April 8, 1934 in Marquette, KS to Harriet and Marion Horner. He attended the University of Kansas on baseball and football scholarships where he graduated in 1956 with a B.S. in business. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He is also a graduate of the Stanford University Executive Program. During his 35 years with KPMG (Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co.), Mr. Horner rose from entry-level accountant to Chairman and CEO. He was among the first in the accounting profession to foresee the globalization of markets and the need for worldwide accounting standards, and he engineered the firm's merger with Klynveld Main Goerdeler in 1987, forming KPMG and serving as the combined company's Chairman and CEO as well as Chairman and CEO of KPMG International. Subsequent to his retirement from KPMG in 1991, Mr. Horner served as Chairman and CEO of several private and public companies involved in international finance, real estate and manufacturing. His extensive service on corporate boards included those of American General Corp., ConocoPhillips, Clinical Data, UTStarcom, Inc., Technical Olympic USA, New River Pharmaceuticals, Atlantis Plastics, Inc. and Intrexon. Mr. Horner was a great believer in civic responsibility. His charitable and civic boards included the New York Partnership, New York Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Lincoln Center Institute, the Metropolitan Museum of Art Business Committee, United Way of America, United Way International, Business Higher Education Forum, The Conference Board, American Enterprise Institute, Stanford University Graduate School of Business Advisory Council and Claremont McKenna College. Mr. Horner was committed to providing international educational opportunities for college students. He and his wife Donna established scholarships for study abroad at the University of Kansas, Claremont McKenna College and Westmont College. Mr. Horner is survived by his wife Donna Dillon Manning Horner. He is also survived by his five children: Basil (Jennifer) Horner of Tucson, Arizona; Brian (Ann) Horner of Rancho Palos Verdes, California; Adeline (Olaf) Neubert of Sagaponack, New York; Hal Horner of Tucson, Arizona; and Adele (Jim) Jacques of Portland, Maine. He had eleven grandchildren who brought him great joy. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, where he and his wife have had a home since 1999 and in New York City.
