LARRY MARK Obituary

MARK--Larry. Larry Mark, age 61, had a vast curiosity and zest for life. A resident and lover of New York City and long-time New York Times employee, Larry passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021 after a brief bout with cancer. Larry was born and raised in Scranton, PA and the son of adoring and proud parents Fay and Irving Mark. A graduate of Scranton Central High School and the University of Pennsylvania, Larry received his MBA from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business. With an insatiable curiosity, Larry loved meeting new people, exploring new places, and learning new, frequently obscure, things. With an innate ability to connect with others and converse about any and all topics, Larry never met a stranger, turning chance encounters into life-long friendships. His uniquely "only could happen to Larry" stories, comedic sensibilities, and encyclopedic knowledge were both engaging and endearing, but his true gift was his deep, loyal, unwavering, giving, trustworthy, "always there", personal friendship that he gave to those he called friends (and, all were friends in Larry's eyes.) Endemic to Larry's nature was performing significant acts of kindness, at each turn, and never letting anyone know. A mentor extraordinaire, Larry loved helping others. Kind, compassionate, giving, generous, calming, purveyor of wisdom, bright, witty, fun, and humble, Larry touched people in significant ways, having a life-long impact on those he met. Among his many passions were his creations outside of work, including MBAstyle.com, MyJewishBooks.com, MyJewishFilm.com, the SchmoozeDance Jewish Film Fest in Park City, Utah, and as working as a contributing editor to Jewlicious and Jewcy. A loving son, extraordinary and treasured brother, incredible friend, and amazing uncle, Larry is survived by Dr. Michael and Donna Mark of West Hartford, CT; Lisa and Helaine Mark of Marietta, GA; his adoring nieces and nephews: Jordan, Shirah, Hannah, Jacob, Aaron, and Samuel Mark; numerous cousins from around the globe, and countless friends. A kind soul, Larry ("Lar") was truly one of a kind. He will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held on Sunday October 17, 2021 at 9:30am in the West Pittston Jewish Cemetery, PA. Local Shiva will be observed on Sunday at the family residence. Donations may be made to the philanthropy of your choice. Services were handled by the Carlucci- Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc. 1992: Larry Mark at Columbia Business School

Larry,

Your ever-present smile brightened the hallways of Uris Hall of Columbia.

You left your mark on all of us as a diligent, dedicated and responsible person: as the managing editor of our school newspaper (...you know, pre-internet days), you ensured the "Bottom Line" was written, published and distributed weekly for all of B-School to read. The paper was NEVER late! Dependability was your mantra. It was amazing that you were also the driving force in generating close of $50,000 in advertising, a large sum in those days, for the paper!

I am very grateful we kept in touch after grad school but am sad that your departure was too soon.

Your family will miss you dearly. The hearts of your friends from our Columbia days will always be a bit warmer each time you and your patented bright smile flash across their memories...

I have met him in 2007 and I have been friends with him since then. He's helped me and supported me in achieving what I have now in my career as an educator. He's instrumental in making me finished my PhD and I am forever grateful for all the advises he generously gave me. My sincerest condolences to Larry's family.

Though I did not know your loved one, I send my deepest and heartfelt condolences. This gentle man sounds like an amazing person and the world will feel his loss. I wish I had had the opportunity to cross his path. We could all benefit from trying to emulate your Larry. Thank you for sharing such a loving tribute. It helps to remind us that we all are capable of being just a little more kind and caring. Actions that cost nothing but need much more practice. Sincere sympathy for your loss.

For Michael and Lisa:
I was very sad to learn about Larry´s passing. Although I was a classmate of Michael´s a long time ago in kindergarten, and left Scranton many years later, somehow Larry and I reconnected. He was a wonderful person, keeping me up to date about family events and joining joyously in our simchot. He had fascinating stories that he readily shared and a love of life that was apparent to all those with whom he came in contact. He will be sorely missed. May you be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

I am so shocked and saddened to hear of Larry´s passing. He was a bright, funny and kind guy always ready with a genuine smile and a laugh. I have so many wonderful and funny memories of our youth at the JCC and in the neighborhood. I wish for strength and peace for Lisa, Michael and their families as they process this terrible loss.
