LAWRENCE CHEUNG Obituary

CHEUNG--Dr. Lawrence. Dr. Lawrence Chi Chuen Cheung was a beloved husband, father, public health advocate, researcher and physician leader. Born in Hong Kong on July 14, 1972 to Helena and Eddie Cheung, he moved to New Jersey with his family in 1981. He graduated from Millburn High School in 1990 and Harvard College in 1994, before earning his MD from Columbia University in 1998. He trained in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) before completing a Dermatology residency at Washington University, St. Louis in 2005. An exceptional private practice dermatologist who also served as the principal investigator for clinical trials, Lawrence was a tireless advocate for the autonomous practice of medicine with a steadfast commitment to public health. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, and a mentor and educator at UCSF. In 2014 he was elected President of the San Francisco Marin Medical Society (SFMMS). He served as Chair of the SFMMS Delegation to the California Medical Association (CMA), on the CMA Board of Trustees, and as Delegate to the AMA. In 2022 he fulfilled a lifelong ambition after election to become Vice-Speaker of the CMA House of Delegates. Lawrence tirelessly advocated for health equity in San Francisco's Chinatown community as a SF Health Authority Commissioner, and as a Board Director for the National Council of Asian and Pacific Islander Physicians. While at Columbia, he served as the first national president of the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association, through which he met Angela Wong; they married in 1999. Lawrence exemplified what it means to be a physician leader, contributing his boundless energy to the priorities and values of organized medicine. Under his leadership, SFMMS championed trailblazing public health victories to regulate e-cigarettes and sugary beverages and advocated for forward-thinking policies to improve healthcare access for the underserved. As a result of his leadership, the lives of countless Californians have been improved and lengthened. Dr. Cheung passed at home surrounded by the love of his family on July 17, 2023. He is survived by his wife Angela, children Amelia and Aidan, his parents and his sibling Sunny. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would appreciate donations to the "AMA Foundation -- In Memory of Dr. Lawrence Cheung" amafoundation.org/donate to fund scholarships that honor his legacy and passion for medical students to engage in public health care advocacy early in their career.

Dr Cheung was my sister's and dad's dermatologist. He was very kind to my elderly dad who was hard of hearing. He would speak Cantonese slowly and extremely loud so my dad could hear/understand him.

Very sad to learn that he has passed away.

Kind regards,

Sherry

My family were patients of Dr. Cheung. I called to make an appointment today and was shocked to find out about Dr. Cheung. He was a great doctor. I too have twins and we had wonderful conversations about our twins, his trip to Hong Kong, and also why identical twins might have different skin issues. We will miss him. Our condolences to his wife and family.

That the good die young should not happen here on earth. Yet Dr. Cheung accomplished great deeds for those in medical need more than most physicians combined. May his legacy of the Spirit of Caring Giving Healing Friendship & Professionalism be enshrined for all to learn from forever!

I was so shocked to hear of Dr Cheung's passing when I made my appointment! I have been Dr Cheung's patient & friend for over 2 decades and he was always sincere, thoughtful and caring. His smile brightens up any room. As an actor & stuntman, he kept my eczema in check especially when I had jobs away from the Bay Area and needed extra help clearing my skin issues. I will miss our "movie" conversations and his questions about Hollywood stars. Heartfelt condolences to his ohana & friends. Rest in heavenly peace Dr Cheung.

I worked and shadowed Dr. Cheung several years ago and he had a strong impact as I navigated choosing between a multitude of career paths as a young adult. I was always so amazed at how intelligent, cheerful, kind hearted and down to earth he was as I worked at his tightly run private practice. He even invited me to join a North East Medical Services (NEMs) board meeting to which he advocated for better access to resources for those who could not afford them. I remember these moments like they were yesterday because of his generosity he showed to young people like me. Thank you so much for all you have done for your community Dr. Cheung You will always be remembered!

I had the pleasure of having tea with Lawrence a few months ago at his home as we discussed the work of the National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians. We also had a chance to talk about his hopes and his careful planning about how he thought about his contribution to Asian community health. His candid but humble narrative was something I was in awe of, particularly as he declared he was lucky to have stumbled into a clinical trial to address his cancer. At the same time, he shared with me his happiness in having time with his parents, wife and children in the last few weeks just enjoying conversation and dinner together in their home. What's more to say? Lawrence, thank you for being a thoughtful, considerate, generous colleague and friend to all that you met. You have inspired us all. That is a life well lived.

Lawrence was a giant among us, a mentor to medical students and those in training, and an inspiration for Asian Americans in medicine who seek to become the kind of physician advocate Lawrence was. His impact lives on in all of us who have been fortunate to know him.

What a loss. Dr. Cheung was humble, down-to-earth, and a wonderful physician and champion for public health. I remember his spirit and wit so clearly from days working with him through the San Francisco Medical Society when I was a trainee. He was a wonderful leader and role model, and he will be missed.

I was very sad to learn of his passing. I enjoyed working with him in 2014 on the first San Francisco soda tax campaign.

He stepped up for every opportunity to raise awareness of the harms of sugary beverages and as a result, brought extremely valuable earned media attention to the issue through broadcast and print media.

A true role model for young physicians who want to use their position of respect and influence to help heal the world, I am sad to think of what more he could have done.
