LEON CHARNEY Obituary

CHARNEY--Leon H., Esq.

The Yeshiva University family mourns the passing of Leon H. Charney Esq., an alumnus of Yeshiva College 1960, from which he earned his B.A and B.H.L degrees. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree at Yeshiva in 2005. After completing Brooklyn Law School he was appointed to the Bar in 1965. Leon H. Charney served on the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law Board of Overseers for 32 years and played a significant role in helping to build the Cardozo capital projects such as its refurbished lobby and the Center for Student life. He also provided scholarship aid for deserving and needy students together with his wife Tzili. They are YU Guardians. World renowned for his role in helping save Jews from the Soviet oppression and bringing them to safety in Israel, Leon also helped bring about the Camp David Peace Accords with Israel and Egypt, serving as a secret advisor to President Jimmy Carter and as the "Backdoor Channel" which has been featured in books he wrote, and a film that was widely acclaimed. President Carter referred to him as "The Unsung Hero of the Camp David Peace Accords." His Sunday afternoon "Leon Charney Report" Talk Shows features fascinating discussions with the top leaders of Israeli and American politics among other matters of current interest. These programs go back over 30 years. His love of Cantorial music was expressed in his serving as a cantor at religious services and performances since he was 20 years old. He and his wife Tzili are "baalei chessed" distinguished philanthropists, with an open hand and warm heart to assist all who needed help. He was honored as Yeshiva College's Distinguished Alumnus in 1977 and is one of YU's foremost successes in the business world in the field of real estate and is listed in the Forbes Five Hundred. May his wife Tzili, his sons Mickey and Nati, his sister Bryna (and Lenny) Dreyer, his nieces and nephews all find comfort among all who mourn for Zion and Jerusalem. Yeshiva University Richard M. Joel, President Norman Lamm, President Emeritus David P. Samson, Chairman, Cardozo Law School Board of Overseers
