LEON LIDOFSKY Obituary

LIDOFSKY--Leon Julian, 91.

Loving husband, father, and grandfather, he was a Connecticut Yankee and Professor radiant, who glowed in NYC and beamed much later in Vermont. His sun set on September 12, 2016. Darkness prevails.

I cannot find adequate words to describe the late Professor Leon Lidofsky. He was a kind and humble individual who consistently took the time to explain even the most complex concepts, such as particle transport, with remarkable simplicity. His approachability and unwavering patience left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of learning from him. Thank you so much Professor, I will never forget you and Mrs. Eleanor Lidofsky. Your guidance and kindness have made a lasting impact on me.

Prof. Lidofsky was my thesis advisor in the late 1960s. Lee was an important influence in both my professional career and in my personal life. I will always remember him as a brilliant scientist, a caring individual, and a gentle giver of wisdom.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Leon only in recent years and wish to send my sincere condolences to his family.

Lee was a marvelous mentor, a milestone in my life and for whom I retain a great fondness. He served to guide N.E. through a transition that has yielded APAM, essentially saving the core of N.E. Ironically, renewed interest in nuclear power has exploded; this to abate the atmospheric carbon load. The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) has risen to the fore in these interests; especially in China, India. The MSR concept was also studied in N.E. Leon's passing closes a sginificant chapter in the history of the Engineering School.

I thought about Professor Lidofsky just now, so searched for him on-line, and found he had died within the week. Coincidence?!

As a student at Columbia, B.S. '64, M.S. in Nuclear Engineering '65, I had many, many interactions with Professor Lidofsky. If it had not for him seeing the (well-hidden) promise in me, and his thoughtful and kindly encouragement & support, I never would have completed my degrees.

I was only one of many he mentored, and he was a high-point of being at Columbia. I extend my condolences to his family & many friends.
