LEONARD GUBAR Obituary

GUBAR--Leonard Gubar.

April 22, 1937 -- February 16, 2018. Son of the late Jacob and Beatrice Gubar (Miller). Devoted husband of Sandy, loving father of Justine, brother of Edward, brother-in-law of Martin (Deidre Green). Uncle of Molly Gubar (Kieran Setiya), Simone Silverbush (Jeff), Matthew Silverman (Krisztina Varga) and Andrew Silverman (Caroline Kandell). Great-uncle of Eli Setiya, Samuel Silverbush, Jonah Silverbush, Anna Silverman and Natalie Silverman. Len grew up in North Bergen, NJ, where he graduated from P.S. 9 and later from Weehawken High School. After receiving both a BA and a law degree from Cornell University, he practiced law in New Jersey, before moving to Greenwich Village in New York. Len practiced corporate law for more than 55 years. During his career he was a partner and head of the New York Office's Corporate Group at the law firm now known as DLA Piper. Before that he was a partner in the law firm of Thelen Reid & Priest, serving different terms on that firm's Management Committee. Prior to that, Len was the managing partner with Spengler Carlson Gubar Brodsky & Frischling. Len was involved in his community in Manhattan as well as at his summer residence in Amagansett, NY, and his winter home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was the Director and Treasurer of Everyone Reading Inc. (the successor to the New York Branch of the International Dyslexia Association), served on the Dunes Racquet Club in Amagansett where he was a fierce competitor, a member of the Board of Directors of the Arizona MusicFest, a member of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Advisory Board, and a director at the Scottsdale Cultural Council. Len was a dedicated Mets fan since the team was established in 1962. He also loyally supported the Giants, Rangers and Knicks. He was a nationally ranked Scrabble player, a routine finisher of New York Times crossword puzzles, and a successful fantasy baseball competitor. Services will be held Tuesday, February 20th at 10am at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 W. 76th St. Contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Len was a Board member of Everyone Reading and IDA for many years. He always gave sage advice, donations desperately needed, his time and energy such that children with learning disabilities in need can now have better lives. We are grateful for his life.
