LEONARD TOW Obituary

TOW--Leonard. The New York Genome Center mourns the passing of Dr. Leonard Tow, who died on August 10, 2025, at the age of 97. A visionary philanthropist, Dr. Tow and the Tow Foundation played a pivotal role in the Center's early work on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His support helped launch the ALS Consortium, uniting leading scientists and clinicians worldwide to advance understanding of the disease, enable broad data sharing, and move discoveries toward treatments. Dr. Tow also championed the creation of the Women's Genetics Center in partnership with Columbia University Irving Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian, a pioneering initiative dedicated to transforming women's healthcare through clinical whole-genome sequencing and genetic counseling. Dr. Bing Ren and Dr. Tom Maniatis, together with the faculty, scientific leadership, and staff of the New York Genome Center are deeply grateful for the remarkable generosity and partnership of Dr. Tow and the Tow Foundation. His visionary leadership and generosity leave an enduring mark on our organization, and so many others. He will be deeply missed. Russell L. Carson Ivan G. Seidenberg Co-Chairs of the Board

Len was a major factor in determining my move to the US to continue my work on ALS and SMA at Columbia. He was a warm friend, an engaged supporter and, when necessary, a stern critic! I have so many fond memories and send warm wishes from Salome and myself to Emily, Andrew and the whole family.
