LOIS CONWAY Obituary

CONWAY--Lois Karch, passed away on April 8, 2022 of complications of heart disease. She is survived by her daughters Rebecca Martinez (husband Pablo Martinez) and Caroline Conway (husband Walshe Birney), her grandson Rafael Martinez, and her sister Nancy Karch. Lois was born in 1944 in Chicago and has degrees from the Universities of Michigan, Chicago, and NYU, and worked for many years as a banker. She, her former husband Robert Conway, and her two daughters lived more than a decade in England and, following her return to New York, she became a committed philanthropist, generously dedicating time, keen intellect, and resources to multiple causes including the UJA, the FJC, and MasterVoices. Theater, opera, and musical arts were passions for her and sources of great joy. Lois was a true matriarch in her family, and also had an amazing circle of dear friends. She easily forged friendships and expended time and energy to nurture them, remaining loyal and present. Her friends, her family, and the people who have had the great fortune to work with her over the years, all loved her and called her one of the kindest (and funniest) women they have known. She will be remembered by many as a true force of nature, and with deep love and affection. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be organized at a future date. Donations in her memory can be made to the UJA-Federation of New York or to MasterVoices.

"Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffins, let the mourners come."
Lois has left us and Westport all too soon and we express our most serious and sincere condolences to Rebecca, Pablo, and Rafa; and Caroline and Walshe; and Nancy; and her wonderful father who she will join in eternity. We were landlord and tenant for a score of years and were friends for the same twenty years. We shared houses and parties and dinners and weddings and talks of opera and children and triumphs and woes. She loved Westport and Westport loved her in return.
We wanted to command time, but it won´t listen
Polish the moments `til they glaze and glisten
Knowing that seize each day as it arrives
Is the better way to lead our lives.
May your memory be eternal.
