LOIS RAPPAPORT Obituary

RAPPAPORT--Lois. The daughter of the Late Philip and Margaret Rappaport of Binghamton, NY, Lois passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024, at the age of 86, following a valiant battle with cancer. Lois was married for 47 years to her beloved Ray Shanfeld, who passed away in 2020. Together, they toured the world seeing animals in their natural habitats and finding peace in the Italian countryside where they could sculpt and draw. Lois worked on Wall Street, in academia and then embarked on a decades-long career as a distinguished Labor Arbitrator and Member of the National Academy of Arbitrators. Following her retirement, she was active as a tour guide for the Metropolitan Opera and served as a docent at the Museum of Natural History, combining her love of the arts with her admiration for nature. Lois is survived by her step- daughter Dr. Lisa Valburg, granddaughters Abigail and Claire, and great-grandchildren Ember and Max. In life, she expressed her appreciation for the kindness of her caregivers and devoted friends who enabled her to stay in the Upper West Side home she adored, surrounded by her art and Ray's sculptures. She will be deeply missed by the friends and relatives who have journeyed with her through a remarkable life.
