LOREN SCHECHTER Obituary

SCHECHTER--Loren.

January 31, 1942 - April 22, 2016. Loren Schechter of Forest Hills and Old Chatham, New York passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on Friday, April 22, 2016 after an extended illness. A life-long New Yorker, Loren graduated from the Bronx High School of Science, City College and New York University School of Law. Loren was a recognized securities law expert beginning his legal career at the New York Stock Exchange before joining the legal department of E.F. Hutton and subsequently becoming General Counsel of Prudential Securities Group. After leaving Prudential Securities, Loren entered private practice as a partner at Kirkpatrick & Lockhart and then Duane Morris where he led the firm's broker-dealer practice. A past president of the Compliance and Legal Division of the Securities Industry Association, Loren was awarded the Alfred J. Rauschman Memorial Award in 2013. Loren will be remembered by his colleagues and clients for not only providing expert legal counsel but for the guidance, mentorship, and friendship he offered. Nothing was more important to Loren than his family and friends. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years Joanne (nee Novod), loving children Gail Schechter and Linda Schechter Manley (Michael), adored grandchildren Zachary, Heather, Ethan and Tyler, loyal dog Judy, cherished brothers-in-law Lewis Novod (Sheila) and Elliot Upton, as well as countless friends. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to be made in Loren's memory to NYU Langone Medical Center in recognition of Drs. Frank O'Brien, Sheetal Desai-Oghraand, and Anna Marissa Araw. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 25, 2016 at 12 noon at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 W. 76th St., New York, NY and the family will sit Shiva in their home.

Not sure what to say?

Loren was the kind of man you somehow thought would always be there - bigger than life, smarter than most, with a quiet matter of fact confidence. I always felt safer whenever I drove through Queens knowing that he was not far in case I needed him for anything, whatever that might be. Still, now, four years later, not so far from me in my thoughts. Elliott

Loren Schechter changed my life. At some of my most important crossroads as a youth, he provided strength, logic and mentor ship, as well as creating and opening many opportunities for me. At the time of my greatest grief he protected me. Loren is among those I hold in highest esteem in my professional life, and will be always. It was an honor to work for him and to have been a trusted member of his team. Joanne I am sorry I only learned of your loss today. Sending much love to you, Linda and Mike, Gail and your entire beautiful family.

I was so sorry to hear of Loren's passing. He was a legal trail blazer and an out sized personality in the broker- dealer world. As you know he was a mentor to many lawyers; my self-included. Having recently lost my wife of 34 years I am familiar with the pain the family is enduring. I truly hope that his memory is a comfort to his wife of many years as well as his children and grandchildren. All of you will be in my prayers.

To Joanne and family, Loren was such a wonderful man, a dear friend and an inspiring lawyer. I knew him for over 25 years as an outside counsel to Prudential and then as a colleague in the securities bar. He was an honest and ethical attorney who always tried to do the right thing in handling the most difficult cases. He was a mentor to young lawyers and despite that we were from different law firms he always shared his thoughts and opportunities. I will miss him very much. In 1991 when I was building may private practice career at Kutak Rock as third year partner he gave me terrific opportunities and was a loyal and generous client to our firm. A great legal career, a great family man and above all a great man. I'm quite sure that when he met the Lord he jumped right in with open arms, energy and enthusiasm and probably a few suggestions on how to improve the heavens. God bless him.

Joanne, Gail and Linda and all the wonderful Schechter family, you all have been a second family to me for close to thirty years, and John and I will miss Loren very much, despite our now living in California. Our return trips to Chatham were only to see madeline and Ed, and you and Loren dear Joanne. We love you very much and know how hard all this is for you. Our respect for the brilliant man Loren was is clear, but our LOVE for one of the kindest and most generous men we've ever met towers above all. RIP Loren. We love you all. Matthew and John

Dear Joanne, My heart is broken for you. Loren was not only a brilliant litigator but also a kind and loving friend with a wonderful sense of humor along with always being willing to offer advice to me and, of course, to share his dinner with my dog. He was a wonderful husband, a dearly loved father, and a proud and nurturing grandfather. What more could one ask for in a person? I count myself as a very lucky person to have had him as my friend. I will miss him and he will always be in my thoughts and prayers, as will you, Gail, and Linda.
