M. LEVIN Obituary

LEVIN--M. Joseph. Joseph "Joe" Levin, 82, of New York City and West Stockbridge MA, died December 7th in New York City following a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving family and in the care of the palliative team at Mount Sinai Hospital. Joseph, predeceased by his parents, Isaac and Deborah, is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ellen, sons Jonathan and David, daughters-in-law Kara and Kara, grandsons Jacob, Gabriel, Max and Henry, and sister and brother-in-law Sherry and Frank Star. Born in Burlington, VT, Joe received his B.A. at the University of Vermont, and his JD at Cornell University. Moving to New York City in 1965, he first practiced law for the Legal Aid Society, followed by more than four decades of private practice in Elmhurst, NY. Joe was a congregant at The Chatham Synagogue. Joe, known for his sense of humor and easy way with people, had many passions, none greater than helping and supporting others. Joe brought intelligence, pragmatism and a great sense of humor to any situation. He was a longtime Board Member of Sunnyside Community Services and a volunteer at other community organizations in New York and the Berkshires. Other passions included his family, Democratic politics, the New York Yankees and, in retirement, pickleball. Joe will be remembered for his rapid-fire puns and love of the Sunday Times crossword and the daily Spelling Bee. A memorial service for Joseph will be held in January. An all-around good and generous soul. Family gatherings won't be the same without his sense of humor.....

Was driving through Altamount Pass in Northern California yesterday. Thought of Joe because, the first time he drove through that pass in the 1980s with Jono, Dave, and my son, Kevin, he asked about all the windmills on those hills. He'd not seen windmills in the US before. Looking at the windmills yesterday, I thought of Joe and spoke to Kevin about Joe's boundless curiosity.

I am saddened by Joe´s passing.. I just learned of it after reading the UVM Quarterly .. Joe and I were classmates at Burlington High School and fairly close neighbors. A very pleasant humble man with a nice sense oh humor. I´m fact, he edited a History Term Paper that I had written in college focusing on my many spelling errors. He jokingly stated " I would give you an F on this thing if I were your Professor " He then slapped me on the back and we laughed.
I last saw him in 2018 at our 50 th high school reunion.
My deepest sympathy to his entire family
May he RIP

Joe, Mr. Levin as I called him when I meet him at the age of 12, in the town of Monterey, was the proud Dad of Jonathan, who I refer to as my first baby, and his wife Maryellen were looking for a babysitter, that lived with the family during the week because Joe was working in New York. The love and caring this family shared impacted my whole life, they were truly great people to have in your life. Joe always stopped in to my home when I was raising my sons in Great Barrington, to say hi and check in, blocking traffic, but Joe did not care! Later on I was privileged to meet the grandchildren, who will carry on Joe's love for life and kind warm soul.
I am saddened the world lost Joe, but so honored that he was in my life.

Dear Levin Family: I am sitting here shocked and saddened at the news of Joe's passing. I met Joe at the Food Sustainability and Support program for Multicultural BRIDGE. It was always a joy to work alongside Joe. His caring nature and upbeat attitude made the work fun. I am a lawyer also (no longer practicing) and Joe and I would engage in conversation about various issues of the day while we sorted vegetables and prepared deliveries for families in our community. Joe was as good as they get. May his memory be a blessing to you all. I hope to meet you sometime and share a moment of care about your beloved Joe.

Words cannot adequately express how heavy our hearts are with the passing of our dear friend and pickleball colleague Joe Levin. Many pickleball players say that they frequently stop and count their blessings in the realization that pickleball is really like a "gift" that has brought so much unexpected joy to their lives. At Berkshire Mountain Pickleball we will always remember Joe as "our pickleball gift" in the same way.

I was so saddened to hear of Joe's passing. I was a pickle ball friend and will sorely miss his presence on the court as well as on the sidelines while waiting to play. Either place there was a lot of chuckling. He was fun to be around and had a wise-crack for everything.

My deepest condolences go out to all his family and friends.

To all of Joe´s beautiful family, Please accept my deepest condolences.
I met Joe over a year ago on the Pickleball courts. I know I speak for all of us when I tell you that Joe was so central to our community.
Joe was one of the kindest, funniest, most welcoming members of our organization. Joe was always encouraging us, always complimenting us, always guiding us, and all done with that smile and twinkle in his eye.
He will be missed by all, and will forever be in our hearts.

Dear Mary Ellen, Jonathan, David, and all the Levin and Star families
We were so very sad to hear of the passing of our dear Cousin Joe.
We have wonderful memories of him when we would go into NYC and have brunch together and catch up on old family stories and have some great laughs together. He had the Levinne sense of humour and was always so upbeat and positive.
We both always tried to make an effort to attend family simchas and sadly family occasions that brought us together in more difficult times.
He always stayed connected to his Toronto family.. especially to his late Uncle Nathan Levinne... his late Mother´s brother, with whom he had a wonderful relationship.
We will miss him dearly ,and will keep his memory alive in our our hearts forever.
May his memory be a blessing.
Sending warm hugs and love..
Marsha and Simon
