So many laughs reverberate through the decades. Such deep appreciation and wonder at the planets and stars. Astronomy was so wonderful, in part, because it encouraged our imaginations to flourish. We had fun and learned so very much. To the teacher who stood on the desks and spun kids in swivel chairs to demonstrate rates of rotations. There could never be a better teacher.

Malcom was a force of nature--funny, kind, brilliant, creative--and a thoroughly awesome teacher who instilled in me no less than a life-long love for astronomy. A bright star has left earth and will be dearly missed.

Dear Thompson Family,
I was a student of Mr. T's Einstein's Universe class in 1981. He was so wonderful! He made learning beyond fun with his brilliance and sense of humor. I am so sorry for your enormous loss. Let his memory be a blessing.

Malcolm was a no nonsense guy who always got to the core of the issue. He was a great friend, chef, husband and father. We have know him since 1985and value every moment we spent with him and Janet. Rest in peacewith the Gods.

As one of the many students whose lives were touched by Mr. Thompson in his long and legendary Dalton career, I just want to say thank you. I was a very mediocre student in astronomy although I read every Scientific American article on the subject today (what can I say- I was a late bloomer!) and I remember running into Mr. Thompson at a Dalton event. I told him I had just seen an article proving one of the theories- maybe about the red shift?- that we´d learned about in class so many years ago and that he was the first person I thought of. He was so happy! Such a nice man who genuinely cared. They broke the mold when they made him, in the best way! He will be missed.

We've known Malcolm and his family for half a century, and his students comments are exactly the way he impressed us, only for 50 years. He was irreverent, curious, funny, ready to go, caring, supportive, generous, a man who is hard to think of as not still alive, he was so full of life
We loved him and will miss him very much. Love to Janet, Aitken and Ilse, Web and Jasmin, and Geord and Steph, and to all his grandchildren who will miss him terribly, bless their hearts. Annie, Bob, John and Hannah

When I asked a student what made Malcolm so special as a teacher, she said, "Every time I see a star I think of what I learned from Mr. Thompson. My life has been changed forever." You were an inspirational teacher. Her feelings were repeated by many students.
Love to the family.

Mr. Thompson change my life. He also changed the life of all of my friends. He was that one teacher a student is lucky to ever have. The one that teaches you how to learn. The one who encourages you to question everything and work hard to find answers cosmic or otherwise...all the while giving you that wicked naughty wink. He was the MOST special person among so many special people at Dalton. I talk about him all the time to folks who didn't have the joy of knowing him.
I send my love and respect to him and his family - who are all gems.

"The Doppler Shift....named after some guy named Shift".
Just one of the ways Mr. Thompson got my attention in Astronomy class. I was only semi-inspired by Astronomy, but I was fully inspired by him - which is how I ended up in Advanced Astronomy, just to get another semester with Malcolm, as a high school senior. A nice, funny, decent, warm-hearted man who made the world a better place for many - we need more people like him. RIP.

I adored Mr. Thompson, his classes were among the highlights of my youth. Along with his enthusiasm and sense of humor, he brought a sense of awe and wonder that has stayed with me throughout my life. I am truly saddened by this news and send much love and strength to his family.

Like so many others, I had him at Dalton - but he followed me to Columbia in my freshman year (1980) - where, as I learned, he regularly guest-taught the Astronomy lab for his collaborator Robert Jastrow. He looked right at me and my lab partner, also a Dalton graduate: "What, you again?" A incandescant teacher.
