MARGARET SMILOW

SMILOW--Margaret. Margaret Ann Smilow, of New York City and Orient, NY, known as Margie, died on April 3, 2022 in her Manhattan apartment surrounded by her beloved wife, Takami Yao and her devoted sister, Deborah Smilow, after a long, brave battle with many health issues. She was 66. Margie was born in Manhattan on January 2, 1956. Her family moved to Ohio when she was three and she grew up in Cleveland, where she graduated from Mayfield High School and attended Case Western Reserve University. Margie returned to Manhattan at 19 and started working in television and film. In the mid-70's, she went to Japan to work with the avant-garde television production company, TV Man Union. Returning to New York, she started her own company, Alternate Current, where she produced many television programs in Japan with TV Man Union, and later produced many programs as Director of Culture and Arts Documentaries for WNET/PBS. She won Primetime Emmy Awards for Itzhak Perlman: Fiddling for the Future, and Patti Smith: Dream of Life, a Peabody Award for Degas and the Dance, and Cine Golden Eagle Award for Making the Misfits. She was nominated for a documentary Oscar for Music for the Movies: Bernard Herrmann. Her many films include: The Turandot Project, Kurasawa, and Cinema's Exiles: From Hitler to Hollywood. She was a true producer. There is nobody like her. She will be missed terribly by those who love her.
