I always looked forward to visits with Peggy and conversation over a cup. Her welcome and non-judgmental hospitality warmed a person. She had filled her home with wonderful treasures from around the world: ornately-carved furniture of dark wood, faded photographs, exotic spices for her gourmet cooking, an indoor tree and other healthy plants from her love of gardening, multiple pieces of beautiful art, and everything her beloved cat Sir Grey could want. There just had to be stories there. Questioning about a framed and weathered letter handwritten in cursive Hebrew yielded stories about World War II and brought history closer than mere print in a book ever could. She told family stories of efforts to keep the enemy from knowing what letters were communicating and also of considerations about letting go of home versus taking risks, reaching for the unfamiliar, and being saved to live on, find refuge, and thrive in another place.
Peggy had more than one career. Later in life, she could follow her passions for social justice and helping people, which seemed a good fit. Although she had collected many beautiful things, she cared more about people. She spoke of her children and grandchildren often, with longing and pride. Her greatest treasure seemed to be her family. I am missing a beautiful old soul who brightened the world with her generous love of people.
