Margaret Vaughan Obituary

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Margaret Allan Vaughan, 75, of Columbus died peacefully at home in the arms of her family on Sept. 20, 2008.

A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Margaret was born on Jan. 28, 1933, in Boston, to the late Dr. Stanley H. Rowe and Elizabeth Ridings Rowe. She graduated from Gorham High School in Gorham, Maine, and later attended Bates College, in Lewiston, Maine, and the Osteopathic School of Nursing in Philadelphia.

In 1953, she met and married Charles Richard "Dick" Vaughan, her husband of 47 years. She spent the next 21 years raising her family. In 1974, she returned to work in the dental office of her close friends, David and Nancy Goldston, of Winter Haven, Fla. She later worked for many years as a field representative for the American Red Cross in Winter Haven, and as the regional director for the Central Florida American Heart Association before retiring with her husband to New England. Following the death of her husband in March 2000, she moved to Columbus to be near her daughter.

Her hobbies included playing the piano, singing with the Coral Society of Lakeland, Fla., knitting, traveling, square dancing, walking on the beaches of Maine, reading, and working crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by her loving husband and parents.

Survivors include her sister, Jane Rowe Carlozzi and her husband, Joseph, of Gorham, and their children, Kathryn Pound, Linda Brooks and Patricia Elsemiller, also of Gorham; her son, Charles David Vaughan, his wife, Elena, and their son, Nathan, of Albuquerque, N.M.; her daughter Ellen Elizabeth Gordon and her husband, Richard, and their children, Katherine, Kathleen and Daniel, of Columbus; and her daughter Susan Jennifer Toft and her husband, Justin, and her children, Afton and Dylan Hickey, of Phenix City, Ala.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at St. George's Anglican Church in Columbus. Interment will occur at 9 a.m. Nov. 8, at the Cathedral of St. Paul in Portland.
